Christopher Columbus Hello this is Christopher Columbus speaking hello come and see my amazing journeys and expeditions. Click on the links to find out about my life. All about Christopher Columbus His exportations and voyages His ships

All about Christopher Columbus When he was young he helped his father in his weaving company he also took a great interest in sailing as he watched the travelling merchants bringing back goods from other countries. When he was 14 years old Christopher Columbus worked on a merchant ship he was also teaching himself to read and how to use a compass and learning how to plot a ship. He also travelled through the Mediterranean. At the age of 26 the French fired at the travelling ship. Christopher jumped into the sea in order to save his life. He grabbed a wooden ore and floated into the port Home Christopher Columbus was a famous sailor in the years of 1451 and He lived in Genoa, in Italy. As a little boy Christopher took a great interest in ships. He longed to be a sailor this was what he had always wanted to do. next

Of Portugal. When he lived in Portugal he got married to a woman called Donna Felipa. Then he had a son called Diego. Then a few years later his wife (Donna Felipa) died. He then decided to make and sell maps. He started to talk to people he heard about an explorer called Marco Polo. Then he decided to build ships and find other routes to places to find spices and goods. back All about Christopher Columbus 2

His exportations and voyages His first voyage On Christopher's first voyage he took: barrels of water and wine, crates of sea biscuits, salted beef and cod, sacks of flour, rice, lentils, olives and beans. Christopher set sail on the 3 rd of august on October 13 th Columbus saw land. They stopped for a while to collect gifts and gold. When they left the island the rudder on the Pinta broke off. So they stopped off at the Canary Islands. Then he left again on the 6 th of September. Columbus told his crew that the first person to see land was to get a years worth of pay. Martin Pinzon claimed that he was the first to see the land. When the reached the land Columbus named it San Salvador. He sailed to Cuba. And discovered hammocks, pineapple, peppers, barbecues and tobacco. Fact file on his journey he had unexpected guests they were: fleas, rats, weevils and maggots. home next

Triumphant return Christopher Columbus was away for four months on his second trip. On the journey home he met the pinta to set off back to Portugal together. A great storm split them up as they were both sailing across the Mediterranean sea. He wrote a letter and threw over board in a barrel for other sailors to catch and read he hoped that they would come to rescue him and his crew. Christopher arrived home first to a great welcome but when Pinzon saw Columbus get the glory then Pinzon unfortunately died. Christopher showed the king and queen all of the gifts his that his crew had brought back. Some of the gifts were green parrots, strange fruit, gold, cotton and tobacco. Next home

His second voyage: Home Christopher Columbus sailed to Hispaniola in September she had 17 ships on this voyage. He had may supplies, horses and he came with a crew of 1200 men. Some of the men wanted to settle in Hispaniola some were sent to bring riches to Christopher. They set up a second settlement in Hispaniola and Christopher called it ‘ Isabella ‘ but the settlement was full of disease and many died in hundreds if not thousands. Columbus searched for gold but unfortunately he fell very ill and had to give up. Back at Hispaniola the Indians and the Spanish were fighting. The Indians had a big army but they only had spears as weapons. The Spanish had a small army of 200 soldiers but they had horses, swords and guns. The Indians were surprised as they had never seen horses before. The Spanish people won the war and claimed their victory Next

His third voyage: home On may 1498 Columbus set sail for his third trip. He found the mainland for south America. The king and queen sent a man called Bobadilla to see what was going on in south America. As Spain heard about a strange war and that all of the people had turned against Christopher. When Bobadilla arrived in south America he arrested columbus and sent him back to Spain. The King and queen told Christopher that he was not to go back to sea for two years. Christopher became a lonely man and started to draw maps again.

His ships Home Christopher had three main ships but he sailed on the Santa Maria witch was also the main flag ship. The sailors on board had their own night shifts to watch the ship, clean up and watch for land these shifts were four hours long so the ship boy had to turn over the hour glass. The captain slept on the poop deck and had his own separate cabin. The sailors often caught Scurvy witch is a disease you can still get scurvy if you don’t get enough vitamins and minerals. During the voyages Christopher took animals so the four legged animals had to be hung up in straps to make sure that they didn’t break their legs when the ship was rocking in the ocean.
