 There are many different genres of music which have become popular in the United States.  American musical styles like rock and roll, blues, jazz and hip hop are similar to musical genres of other countries.

 Early American music was influenced by the cultures of immigrants from Europe as well as slaves from Africa, Native Americans.  African musical influence can be seen in modern American music also.

 Originally, each ethnic group had its own type of folk music and folk dances.  Musical styles were later combined to make new types of music.

 Do you like to listen to music? What type of music do you like?  What are your favorite bands (groups)? Why do you like these bands (groups)?  Who is your favorite singer? Why?  Do you play a musical instrument? How old were you when you began learning to play this instrument?

 Rock and roll (also rock n’ roll) is a popular style of American music which combined different styles of music.  Rock and roll became popular in the 1950’s. Some popular American rock singers were Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley.

 In the 1960’s music tastes changed and musicians from the United Kingdom became very popular in the United States. Two very popular groups were the The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.  A new type of folk music, rooted in the protest movement against the Vietnam war also became popular.

 In the 1970’s Disco music became popular. Night clubs called discos were built in cities around the country.  In the 1980’s MTV was created musicians began to make music videos to go along with their songs. Rap music, with words spoken quickly to music also became popular.

 In the 1990’s Grunge music became popular.  In the 2000’s music from the United Kingdom became popular again.  Currently, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Rihanna are very popular.
