Reasons for Exploration and Colonization CuriosityMany Europeans were curious about the rest of the world so they sponsored explorers who traveled to Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Valuable Natural Resources & products When valuable products were found, the kingdoms of Europe would set up colonies to send these products to Europe. Europe would get rich from products like gold, silver, and slaves from other parts of the world. ReligionMany European leaders believed it was a good idea to spread Christianity around the world. This spread the Christian religion, and also helped cause damage or destruction of native religions and culture.
CST Assignments 1. Take a copy of the 10.3 and 10.4 Social Studies Standards and the CST 10.4 info handouts to glue them into your Notebook. 2. Complete the CST practice questions and your goal is to get all of the questions right.

Quick-write on a famous landmark In your notebook, take 3 minutes and write down as much as you know about this famous European landmark. Remember to mention as much as you know about the nation, its people, and culture of the builders of this landmark.

Important European explorers Prince Henry the Navigator Portugal and its Prince Henry the Navigator was the first European kingdom to explore the world when the Portuguese navy sailed to Africa. Christopher Columbus In 1492 when the Christians in Spain finally won back their country from Muslim invaders, the king and queen were anxious to expand their territory so they sent Christopher Columbus to sail to India…where did he end up? Vasco de Gama Portuguese explorer and sailor. Believed that to reach India, it was quicker to sail east & go around Africa. The king of Portugal agreed. Vasco de Gama was successful & reached India in 1498.
Ferdinand Magellan Portuguese navigator and sailor. Contracted by the Spanish monarchy. Credited as the first person to circumnavigate (sail around) the world. His voyage began in 1519 and returned to Spain in 1522.
Hernando Cortez Became a member of the Spanish army because he did not inherit anything from his family. Ran away to Cuba. In 1519 sailed to Mexico. With a small army of Spaniards and rebellious native people he destroyed the Aztec empire in Mexico now became a colony of Spain.
