Poetry Sound Devices- Techniques that create musical effects

Types of Rhyme Exact/ true rhyme: words end in both the same vowel and consonant sounds  Sun and run

Slant Rhyme Words that end in similar but not exact sounds  Prove and love

End rhyme Rhyming words that fall at the ends of two or more lines This is typical of most poems with a rhyme scheme

Internal Rhyme Rhyming words placed within a line Internal rhyme does NOT count toward rhyme scheme. It only adds to the rhythm and meter of the poem.  The mouse in the house woke the cat.

Stanza Types Most common in poetry:  Couplet: 2 lines  Tercet: 3 lines  Quatrain: 4 lines
