Poetry --type of literature that uses the sounds, rhythms, and meanings of words to describe the world
Lines and Stanzas Poetry is divided differently than other writing. Lines- Poetry is divided into groups of words. Stanzas- Groups of lines (similar to a paragraph)
Word Meaning Many poets use words in many ways. Connotation- the FIGURATIVE meaning of a word or group of words. Denotation- the LITERAL meaning of a word or group of words. Diction- The way a writer chooses their words. Writers choose words for specific reasons to create “images” and meaning.
Oral Interpretation Poetry is meant to be read aloud. Poets are MASTERS of language. When you read poetry, be aware of how it can be read aloud. Oral Interpretation- a speaker’s interpretation on the sense and sound of the language of poetry.
Rhyme/Rhythm Because poetry is to be read aloud, there are things to pay special attention to… Rhyme- the repetition of sounds at the ends of words. Rhyme Scheme- a consistent pattern of end rhyme throughout a poem.
Figurative Language Poets use figurative language to share their perceptions and insights. Figurative Language- language that is not meant to be taken literally. Simile- a comparison of unlike things using like or as. Metaphor- a comparison of unlike things without using like or as. Alliteration- repetition of consonant sounds in the beginning of words.
Figurative Language Cont. Onomatopoeia- words that imitate sounds Hyperbole- an extreme exaggeration Personification- giving human characteristics to a nonhuman object. Write examples of figurative language on your notes!
Sensory Language Poets also use sensory language to create images in the reader’s mind. Sensory Language- words/phrases that appeal to the five senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) -Tangy orange- Rustling leaves -Rough sand- Odorous garbage
Syntax Poets will rearrange words depending on what effect they want to create. Syntax- how words and phrases are arranged to create different types of sentences and phrases.
Prose/Verse Prose- writing that is not in poetic form Essays Stories Articles Letters Verse- poetry- ideas written in lines
Types of Poetry Poetry Definition Narrative Poetry tells a story. Have similar elements to stories such as plot and characters Ballads Songlike poems that tell stories. Deal with adventure or romance Haiku 3 lined poem- Line 1- 5 syllables Line 2- 7 syllables Line 3- 5 syllables Concrete Poems shaped to look like their subjects. Arranges lines to look like a picture Free Verse Lacks structure- No regular rhyme, line length, or stanza pattern Limericks Humorous, rhyming five-line poems. They have specific rhyme patterns. Lyric Expresses thoughts and feelings of a single speaker, highly musical
