 Group of American poets and novelists of 1950s and 1960s whose work expressed their alienation from society  Term suggests they felt “beaten” by American life  Romantically rebelled against American culture- especially American middle-class values, purposelessness of modern society and need for withdrawal and protest

Beat Generation continued  Expressed this rebellion through literary works, particularly through loose structure and slang diction  Relied on experimentation, primitivism and inspiration from jazz
