Presentation transcript:

Hip hop is a cultural movement that originated in the working class communities of New York City, United States, in the late 1970s Hip hop is a musical genre which developed alongside hip hop culture, elements in hip hop contain rapping, DJing (deejay is a person who selects and plays recorded music for an audience), scratching (Scratching is a DJ or technique used to produce distinctive sounds by moving a vinyl record back and forth) and beat boxing. Hip hop began in New York City in the 1970s, targeting a small audience of Afro Carrabin's.

It is said that “hip hop” was created by Keith Cowboy (rapper) including key artists such as Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five. However, Love bug Starski, Keith Cowboy, and DJ Hollywood used the term when the music was still known as “Disco rap”. hip hop's "golden age“ is a name given to a period in mainstream hip hop usually cited as the late 1980s to the early The artists most often associated with the phrase are Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, De La Soul, and the Jungle Brothers.

Hip hop attracts a range of fans as hip hop contains sub cultures such as Gangster rap, Ghetto house Grime, Hardcore hip hop, Hip hop soul, Hip house. Due to this the ages of hip hop target audience for example target audience of “Grime” are where as target audience of “gangsta rap” can vary from this causes a problem in collating the demographics of hip hop

the three main sub genres of hip hop are: Reggaeton is a form of Hip-hop that’s traditionally associated with the Hispanic populace. Most Reggaeton artists are Latino, and the preferred language of the genre is Spanish rather than English. Reggaeton is mainly sung rather rapped. Gangsta rap is a subgenre of hip hop that reflects the violent lifestyles of inner-city American black youths. The genre was made in the mid 1980s by rappers such as Schooly D and Ice T, gangsta rap is the most commercially lucrative subgenre of hip hop Nerd core Also known as ‘geeksta rap’. It has grown very popular over resent years A lot of people have heard nerdcore without realizing it, and many are actually fans. Some may argue that nerdcore is any music that gains popularity in the geek community. Still more people claim that only rap and DJ’ing that focus on geek culture count.

Popular record labels in hip hop include: Bad Boy Records Sean "Puffy" Combs has some heavyweight artists including: Black Rob, The Notorious B.I.G., Boyz' N' Tha Hood, Big Gee, Aasim, etc. Aftermath Entertainment Dr. Dre's hip-hop empire is home to The Game, 50 Cent, Stat Quo, Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Eve, etc. Roc-A-Fella Records Established in 1996, Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella is home to artists like Kanye West, Memphis Bleek, and Young Gunz.

Hip hop is a good example of cross media for example, “making the band” series that helps talented artist become famous hip hop was very successful for this as making the band was founded by “puff daddy” (founder of bad boys entertainment). Also hip hop is covered by radio stations and music channels. However other recent years it has been marketed through T.V shows such as “lil romeo” an actor/ rapper gained more succes through his acting career leading to a rapid popularity gain in his singles.

Hip hop originally originated from “disco” however during recent years it rapidly gained sub genres in different countries such as England Germany and America. However this can also be seen as a bad thing as a sub genre can dominate music like hip hop dominated “disco”. Perhaps Hip hop is dying? Also hence the fact that hip hop’s sub genre “gangsta rap” dominates music hip hop has gained criticism as it promotes killing and violence. To young youths mainly afro caribbean’s.
