Tyrol

General Information: ● about inhabitants ● With km², it is the ● third largest province in Austria. ● capital is Innsbruck with ● inhabitants ● The central Inn-valley is densely populated ● Several attractive tourist regions in the side valleys.

Geography The province is split into two parts: a larger one called North Tyrol and a smaller one called East Tyrol Since 1920 the third part called South Tyrol belongs to Italy

Landscape Tyrols landscape is marked by beautiful mountains and green pastures and forests.

Nature The Tyrolean topography is extremely mountainous and large parts of it are under natural protection.

History Like many European regions, Tyrol looks back on a very eventful history. Situated in the heart of Europe it has always been at the crossroads from north to south and east to west. Emperors and Popes have shown their interest in this strategic region, but Tyrol has long maintained its independence. Later it became a vital province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Today the former crossroads have turned into transit highways for the growing flood of traffic.

Industry Tyrol has a strong economy with numerous small and medium sized companies and a few globally active industries. The country's most important industry, however, is tourism. Tyrol, with its well-developed market economy and high standard of living, is closely tied to other EU economies. Important companies:

famous people ● History - Emperor Maximilian I., around Andreas Hofer, local hero ● Science - Erwin Schrödinger ● Sports - Toni Sailer, he won several Olympic gold medals

Andreas Hofer Andreas Hofer (November 22, 1767 – February 20, 1810) was a Tyrolean innkeeper and patriot. He was the leader of a rebellion against Napoleon's forces. In 1809 he became the leader of a rebellion against Franco-Bavarian but was subsequently captured and executed.

Erwin Schrödinger Erwin Schrödinger ( ) was an Austrian physicist who was born in Alpbach, a small mountain village in Tyrol. He became famous as the person who first studied wave mechanics. Schrödinger produced equations that explained the behavior of electrons in atoms. These equations formed the basis of wave and quantum mechanics. In 1933 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics.

Toni Sailer "Toni" Sailer was a Tyrolean alpine ski racer, who is considered among the best in this sport. Sailer, nicknamed "Blitz from Kitz", was born in Kitzbühel. He was the first skier at the Winter Olympics to win all three alpine skiing events, taking gold in the downhill, slalom and giant slalom at the 1956 Winter Olympics.
