A QUOTE SANDWICH HAS 3 MAIN PARTS : 1. Context 2. Quote 3. Analysis

C ONTEXT ( TOP BREAD ) Purpose: to create a transition between the information you have just been writing about. Might Answer the Questions: Who said it? When was it said? What’s being discussed?

Q UOTE ( TASTY MIDDLE ) When using quotations, they Should not be too long. Should not merely state a fact. Must be punctuated correctly. Must be followed by the correct citation. Reminders: Quote will start with a capital letter if it is in the beginning of a sentence. Quote will start with a lower case letter if you start mid-sentence. The period will go after the parentheses in your in-text citation.

A NALYSIS ( BOTTOM BREAD ) Purpose: to give an interpretation of the meaning and explain how it supports your argument. Might contain phrases such as: This shows that… As you can see… This quote proves… This evidence led me to believe… This quote supports my idea of ________ because ________.

W ITH A TOPIC SENTENCE, THE Q UOTE S ANDWICH WILL MAKE ONE TASTY PARAGRAPH. 1. Context 2. Quote 3. Analysis

E XAMPLE : Context: Plato was speaking to a group of students one day at his school. Quote: He said, “Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools talk because they have to say something.” Analysis: He wanted speakers to think before they spoke.

A SSIGNMENT Write 2 paragraphs that include quote sandwiches. One paragraph should have a quote by MLK, Jr. (pg. 171) and the other a quote from Malcolm X (pg. 175). Remember to cite the source! You’ll need a topic sentence for each paragraph followed by the sandwich. Label each section (Topic Sentence, Context, Quote, Analysis)
