Transporting Passengers Safely

2  An effective safety program consists of: contracting with the correct person, training that person, and monitoring that person.

Contracting  Contracting with the correct person Application process Background Checks Drug screen Driving record Criminal record Interview process Panel 3

Training  The trainers probably have the most influence on a new independent contractor. Who provides training Evaluating trainer Well designed training program 4

Monitoring  Somewhat tricky in an independent contractor environment State and federal laws Company policies Insurance company requirements Client requirements 5

Best Practices  SmartDrive Windshield mounted camera Interior and exterior views Records when a predetermined G-force is exceeded Lights on camera give instant feedback which leads to changed behavior Need to get requirement into contracts 6

7

Best Practices  Customer complaints Receive daily reports listing safety related customer complaints Track complaints by vehicle 8

 Driver was rude, argumentative, sped through our subdivision well over the 10 mph speed limit. In addition, the second customer wasn’t ready and we waited well over 10 minutes for him. I’ve been a customer for several years-in Washington D.C., San Diego, and Phoenix. I wont be using your service again.  Hello, I just wanted to write to let you know my ride from LAX to my home was great. The driver was wonderful but there was a horrible woman that kept yelling demands at him such as which way to go and why she should be dropped off first. She was saying she new she should have taken another shuttle that super shuttle is the worst. She insulted everyone on the van, I felt horrible for the driver that was just doing his job and a good one at that. Hopefully she will take her business elsewhere and let the rest of us ride in peace. Thanks, Dan 9

Best Practices  Speeder reports 10

11

Best Practices  Vehicle inspections  Track accident statistics  Claims handling  The more requirements related to safety that can be part of contract the better –Vehicle inspections –Age of vehicles –SmartDrive as mentioned earlier –Hours of service 12

How can Airports help create a safety culture  Require inspections –LA 60 day  Require driver standards –Moving violations –DUI’s –Would the driver be insurable in your organization? 13

Thank You 14
