Realistic Fiction September Genre of the Month

Realistic Fiction Realistic Fiction stories are fiction stories that could be true, but aren’t. Realistic fiction stories are usually set in the present, meaning they read like they are happening right now. Characters like aliens, talking animals, or magicians would make a story fiction, but not realistic fiction.

Let’s Practice Identifying Realistic Fiction books. Realistic Fiction? Yes or No

Realistic Fiction? Arthur has been picked to direct his school's Thanksgiving play and cast the roles. But all his friends want to be the star, and no one wants to play the Turkey! What will Arthur do? 1.

Realistic Fiction? Doug, the main character, discovers that though being Harry's best friend in Miss Mackle's second grade class isn't always easy, as Harry likes to do horrible things, it is often a lot of fun. Check out all of the crazy antics of Horrible Harry in this first Horrible Harry book, Horrible Harry in Room 2B. 2.

Realistic Fiction? Papa will not allow Clara to learn to read. He says that “Farm people like us do not have time to read." But when the traveling bookwagon, with persuasive Miss Mary at the reins, arrives at their farm, Papa realizes he must change his mind. Based on the true story of America’s first ‘bookmobile.’ 3.

Realistic Fiction? Marvin is ignored and feels left out by his classmates, best friends, and teacher after a small incident involving the class bully takes place at recess one day. Will Marvin survive his third grade year? 4.

Realistic Fiction? Jack and Annie are in for a high-seas adventure when the Magic Tree House whisks them back to the days of deserted islands, secret maps, hidden gold, and mean pirates! Will they discover a buried treasure? Or will they be forced to walk the plank? 5.

Realistic Fiction? When Big Anthony borrows Strega Nona's magic ring to turn himself into a handsome man, he gets more trouble than fun. 6.

Realistic Fiction? Guess who's not invited? That meanie Jim has invited everyone in Room Nine to his birthday party on Saturday -- except Junie B.! Should she have her own birthday party six months early and not invite Jim? Or should she move to It's a Small World After All in Disneyland? 7.

How did you do? No Yes

Where can you find realistic fiction books in the Media Center? You may only check out 1 Wildcat Favorite at a time. Not all books in this section are Realistic Fiction books.

Secret Symbols Remember, Secret Symbols are hidden in random books that fall into the Genre of the Month. To find a Secret Symbol, you must check out a book that falls into the Genre of the Month. If you find a Secret Symbol, bring the symbol and the book back to the Media Center on your next visit and you will win a prize! And remember if you find a Secret Symbol, it’s a secret as to what it looks like. So don’t tell anyone. Let everyone have a chance to discover the “secret” for themselves.

Any questions?
