Doctrine and Covenants 19

Printing In June 1829, Joseph Smith hired the printer Egbert B. Grandin to print 5,000 copies of the Book of Mormon at a cost of $3,000. Using his farm as collateral, Martin Harris personally guaranteed to pay the cost of printing if sales of the book did not cover the cost. An 1843 portrait of Egbert B. Grandin. He was twenty-two when he published the Book of Mormon.

Boycott Sales Before the publication was complete, some townspeople held a meeting and passed a resolution not to purchase the Book of Mormon. Concerned about these threats, Grandin stopped printing to avoid not being paid for the work.

When Martin Harris learned of the planned boycott, being aware he would lose his farm if the book didn't sell, he went to Joseph in Manchester, New York, and demanded a revelation from the Lord. "He Came to us and... says, 'The Books will not sell for no Body wants them.' Joseph says, 'I think they will sell well.' Says he, 'I want a Commandment [a revelation].' 'Why,' says Joseph. Says he, 'I must have a Commandment!' Joseph put him off. But he insisted three or four times he must have a Commandment.... "In the morning he got up and said he must have a Commandment to Joseph and went home. And along in the after part of the Day Joseph and Oliver Received a Commandment (D&C 19)" Marin Harris

Define “sin”? Greek: To miss the mark How many sins have you committed? (Approximate) Doctrinally, what happens if a person chooses not to repent? First option: D&C 19:4-6

Finish the phrase: “No ______________ _______ can enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” "For I the Lord cannot look upon ___________ with the least __________ ___ _____________" Define “unclean”

“More than 50 years ago during World War II, we were ordered to the West Coast and then on to the Pacific. We were transported on a freight train with boxcars fitted with narrow bedsprings that could be pulled down from the wall at night. “We were dressed in light-colored summer uniforms. It was very hot crossing Texas and Arizona. Smoke and cinders from the engine made it very uncomfortable. There was no way to bathe or wash our uniforms. “We rolled into Los Angeles one morning—a grubby-looking outfit— and were told to return to the train that evening. We thought first of food. The 10 of us in our crew pooled our money and headed for the best restaurant we could find. It was crowded, and so we joined a long line waiting to be seated. I was first, just behind some well-dressed women. Even without turning around, the stately woman in front of me soon became aware that we were there…

“She turned and looked at us. Then she turned and looked me over from head to toe. There I stood in that sweaty, dirty, sooty, wrinkled uniform. She said in a tone of disgust, “My, what untidy men!” All eyes turned to us. “No doubt she wished we were not there; I shared her wish. I felt as dirty as I was, uncomfortable, and ashamed. “Later, when I began a serious study of the scriptures, I noticed references to being spiritually clean. “Ye would be more miserable to dwell with a holy and just God, under a consciousness of your filthiness before him, than ye would to dwell with the damned souls in hell.”

“I reasoned that to be spiritually unclean would bring shame and humiliation immeasurably more intense than I felt then. I found scriptural references—there are at least eight of them— which say that no unclean thing can enter the presence of God. I decided I wanted to stay spiritually clean.” President Boyd K. Packer, Washed Clean, April 1997 General Conference

Endless or eternal punishment. What do you think of when you hear or read the phrase “endless and eternal punishment”? Why the use of such a scary term when He could have use a different term? Doctrine and Covenants 19:7

“god’s Punishment” “When the Lord comes to give us our reward … and our punishment, I feel that [the Savior] will give that punishment which is the very least that our transgression will justify. “I believe that he will bring all of the infinite love and blessing and mercy and kindness and understanding which he has.” President J. Reuben Clark

“Unrepentant sinners must suffer even as [Jesus] did; they will one day personally experience the full justice of God (see D&C 19:16–18). Additionally, they will also then face and feel all the misery they have caused countless others!” Elder Neal A. Maxwell, October 2001 General Conference

Second option if a person chooses not to repent? D&C 19:16-19 What reason did the Savior give for why He suffered for our sins? So… is there no suffering for sin?

Which temptations least affect you? Why? Age of first exposure? Genetics? Premortal advancement? Circumstances? James 1:13-14 “What we are speaking about is so much more than merely deflecting temptations. Remember, brothers and sisters, it is our own desires which determine the sizing and the attractiveness of various temptations. We set our thermostats as to temptations.” (Elder Maxwell, “According to the Desire of [Our] Hearts”, October 1996)

Why are suffering and consequences required? See D&C 19:20

Withdrawal of Spirit “At the time I withdrew my Spirit”… Lucy Mack Smith, Joseph’s mother, recalled that when Martin Harris told Joseph Smith about the lost manuscript he “cried out in a tone of deep anguish, ‘Oh, I have lost my soul! I have lost my soul!’” “The painful consequences of sin were purposely put in His plan of happiness by a compassionate Father in Heaven so that you need not follow that tragic path in life. A sinner will not only suffer in this life, but sins that have not been forgiven through true repentance will cause anguish beyond the veil.” (Elder Richard. G. Scott, October 2002)

“If you have difficulty in feeling the Holy Ghost, you might wisely ponder whether there is anything for which you need to repent and receive forgiveness” Henry B. Eyring

Specific Commands to Martin… v. 13 Repent. v. 23 Listen to the Lord's words. Be humble. v. 25, 26 Don't covet your own property. v. 28 Pray vocally and silently v. 30 Trust God; do not revile.

MORMON MESSAGE: Reclaimed

“Sporadic and shallow dipping in the doctrine of Christ and partial participation in His restored Church cannot produce the spiritual transformation that enables us to walk in a newness of life….Offering our whole soul unto God is required if we are to receive the blessings of eternity. … “Total immersion in and saturation with the Savior’s gospel are essential steps in the process of being born again.” “Ye Must Be Born Again,” Ensign, May 2007, 21
