Bosnian Genocide By: Chris Martin & Brianna De Cicco

What were the different factors/environment like in the country that helped lead to the genocide? ●The end of the Cold War ●Decline of communism ●Democratization of Russia ●Reunification of Germany

Cont. ●Czechoslovakia getting away from communist influence ●After dictator Josip Broz Tito’s death, politicians began exploiting nationalist rhetoric, having the Serbs, Croatians and Bosniaks against each other

●Serbia ●Ethnic Bosnian Muslims ●Bosnian Muslim ○Bosniaks ●Croatians Perpetrators Victims

How was this genocide a collective event? ●Bosnian Serb forces, with the backing of the Serb dominated Yugoslav army o Targeted both Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) and Croatian civilians resulting in the deaths of some 100,000 people Memorial

8 Stages of Genocide - Classification ●In 1992, the republic of Bosnia - Herzegovina merged with Yugoslavia ●Bosnian Serbs distinguished themselves superior to all non Serbs

8 Stages of Genocide- Symbolization Bosniaks were symbolized and received symbols of a crescent moon and star or cross

8 Stages of Genocide - Dehumanization ●Non Serbs were called “Aliens” or “Others” to make it seem they did not belong ●The government controlled the media and would say hate speeches about non Serbs ●Media also depicted non Serbs as rude, mean, selfish, and evil

8 stages of Genocide - Organization ●The government began an “Ethnic Cleansing” ●Serbs tactics were very similar o Planning and practicing of attacks

8 Stages of Genocide Polarization ●Social interaction between Serbs and non Serbs was soon restricted ●New laws were made forbidding Serbians from intermarrying with non Serbians

8 Stages of Genocide - Preparation ●Bosnian Muslims were forced out of their home towns into concentration camps o filled with disease and starvation

8 Stages of Genocide - Extermination ●Nearly 200,000 Bosnian Muslims were murdered by Milosevic's army and other organized Serb Attacks. Men, women, and children were rounded up and shot on the spot. Others were forced into concentration camps with little chance of survival.

8 Stages of Genocide - Denial ●National organizations accepted the genocide as the term “Ethnic Cleansing” to avoid the reference to genocide. Many graves were moved, which made it difficult to identify corpses. ●Bodies Burned

What was the international response during and/or after the genocide? ●Reports of mass killings and rape slowly came out of Bosnia ●Once photos and videos of concentration camps like Omarksa and Trnopolje were published, the reports captured the world’s attention ●Despite the public outrage created by these reports, the international community still refused to intervene

Cont. ●A year later, after Serbian forces had taken over several Bosniak- dominated cities, the UN established six safe areas that were to be protected by international peacekeepers ● However with very few weapons and orders not to fire unless in self- defense, these peacekeepers were completely useless

Justice for Victims ●The leaders of the preparation of the genocide camps and sentences varies from 5 yrs - life in prison ●All plead not guilty o All found guilty ●Memorial of those who passed
