The MAIN causes… MILITARISM ALLIANCES IMPERIALISM NATIONALISM

Many Serbs lived in Bosnia, but it was still ruled by Austria-Hungary. Serb nationalists felt Bosnia should not be ruled by the Austrians, but by the Serbs. On June 28, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir to the Austrian throne) was traveling with his wife through Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia. The Black Hand was a secret society that wanted to rid Bosnia of Austrian rule.

Gavrilo Princip, a 19 year old member of the Black Hand killed the Archduke and his wife at point blank range as they rode in an open automobile…a chain reaction followed

Austria Hungary blamed Serbia for the murder of their Archduke, and made harsh demands Serbia refused to meet these demands Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, July 28, 1914 Russia, a Slavic nation and friend of Serbia mobilized their military Germany, an ally of Austria- Hungary declared war on Russia Germany also declared war on France, an ally of Russia Germany invaded Belgium on August 3,1914 so German forces could enter France easier Britain declares war on Germany WWI BEGINS !!!!!
