Since it was established in 1990 over 300 patients have received cochlear implants at this centre. At the end of 2005 SOECIC was supporting 124 adults, 48 teenagers and 126 children with cochlear implants including 10 using bilateral implants. The team has grown to over 25 staff members. The team consisted of surgeon, radiologist, hearing therapist, audiological scientist and clerical support First child received a cochlear implant Teacher of the Deaf joins the team Ineraid Initial tuning of first child with congenital hearing loss BBC Film Katy -The Early Years The South of England Cochlear Implant Centre (SOECIC) provides a regional service for severely and profoundly deaf adults, teenagers and children in the South of the UK and the Channel Islands. Situated within the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at the University of Southampton SOECIC benefits from being part of a high quality research establishment. Hearing and Balance Centre established 10 adults and 5 children received cochlear implants in this year SOECIC hosts BCIG Annual Conference Hanen Parents’ Communication Course launched Two Implant Surgeons Comments on some of the changes in Service Provision “ We didn ’ t expect speech but the cochlear implant has opened up her world ” (parents of an autistic child with an implant) “ I never knew it was such a noisy world ” (teenager implanted at 15) Parents ’ Communication Course “ Left course feeling I can really help my child ” (parent) User Group Meetings “ It was helpful to discuss with someone who has watched their child undertake a major operation and to hear how well they developed ” “ It ’ s made me understand a lot more about what to expect ” “ I found the meeting very useful in understanding what kinds of sounds she will hear and also the support she will need ” Deaf Advocate Meeting “ inspirational ” (parent) In 2006 SOECIC will be moving into new purpose-built accommodation with state of the art audiological test facilities, rehabilitation and seminar rooms.
