Earth quakes happen when a sudden release of energy is created in the earths crust and sends shock waves through the plates. These waves cause earth’s.

Earthquakes are caused by when Earth’s rocks surface shift quickly. Some scientists think that earthquakes are caused by slow movements inside the earth.
Essential Questions What is an Earthquake? What is a Tsunami? What Causes Earthquakes? What are the Effects of Earthquakes?
Causes of earthquakes An earthquake is defined as the shaking of the earth’s crust Can be large or small Earthquakes occur when energy is suddenly released.

Earthquakes and Volcanoes p What is This?
An earthquake is a shaking of the ground caused by the sudden breaking and movement of large sections (tectonic plates) of the earth's rocky outermost.
Earthquakes Aim: What causes earthquakes?. Stress Stress (stored energy) is created in the crust as the plates move around. Faults are breaks in the rock.
Formation of the Earth EARTHQUAKES.  An earthquake is a natural hazard caused by the sudden and rapid movement of a large volume of rock  Earthquakes.
Earthquakes. Causes of Earthquakes An earthquake is a shaking of Earth’s crust caused by a release of energy Mostly caused by the strain that builds.
  The location underground where an Earthquake begins is the focus.  The crust breaks at the focus, and the released energy pushes outward in all directions.
Disasters come in many shapes and sizes. Most are related to the weather. Some are predictable, like a hurricane. Some, like an earthquake, surprise us.

Shensi Earthquake By Allanah Mackenzie

Shensi earthquake This earthquake (457 years ago on January the 23 rd 1556) happened in Shensi (china). More than 830,000 people are estimated to have been killed. Damage was reported as far away as 500 miles. In most towns walls collapsed, nearly all houses collapsed and many of the towns reported cracks in the ground (called fissures) with water gushing out. This disaster is still considered the deadliest of all time.

What is an earthquake? Earthquakes are the shaking, rolling or sudden shock of the earth’s surface. They are the Earth's natural means of releasing stress. More than a million earthquakes rattle the world each year. Earthquakes can be felt over large areas although they usually last less than one minute. Earthquakes cannot be predicted - although scientists are working on it.

Facts Earthquakes are caused by movements of plates underneath the Earth's surface. The places where these plates meet are breaks in the Earth's crust called faults. Earthquakes often happen when these plates along the faults move in different directions. These shifting plates create energy that is called seismic waves. These waves move outward just like waves that are formed by a disturbance in a body of water (picture the rings in a lake when you throw in a pebble).

Earthquake Waves

Tsunamis If their is water above a fault it will cause a tsunami to happen if their is houses or land above it will be an earthquake.

Facts It is important in countries that have a lot of earthquakes such as Japan to build houses and buildings that react well to earthquakes.

Facts Earthquakes don't kill people. People's houses in the midst of earthquakes sometimes kill people because parts of buildings fall on them.
