Presentation transcript:

We should dislike Curley’s wife because..

“Well I think Curley’s married a tart..” She’s two faced because she doesn't like Curley - she tells Lennie that he only married him when she didn't receive a letter she'd been promised to get into Hollywood. In this picture taken from BBC bite size, she looks like a patronising bitch. The BBC never lie. “Don’t you even take a look at that bitch. I don’t care what she says and what she does. I seen ‘em poison before, but I never seen no piece of jail bait worse than her.” “ S h e ’ s a r a t t r a p. ” She even said Lennie was crazy, so why stay and talk to him? – Asking for trouble. Curley's wife is constantly with other men, and will not stop until she gets what she desires.

She seeks out greater weaknesses in others in order to protect herself, like when she threatens to get Crooks hung because he spoke out against her. ‘”Listen, Nigger,” she said. “You know what I can do to you if you open your trap?”’ … ‘”I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain’t even funny”’ Curley’s wife said this to Crooks, after she felt threatened by him. Crooks’ main weakness is his insecurity about how others treat him because of his race. She realises this, and uses it to her advantage, in order to protect herself. She uses his main weakness and insecurity to her advantage – we should dislike her.

She married Curley to spite her mother, not out of love for him. “I ast her (her mother) if she stole it, too, an’ she says no. So I married Curley.” … “Maybe I ought’n to. I don’t like Curley. He ain’t a nice fella.” She married Curley to get revenge on her mother, as she believes that her mother stopped her from being in the movies. She does think that it was wrong, but this doesn’t stop her from being a bad person. She married someone that she doesn’t like, just to make someone else angry – we should dislike her.

She dreams of bettering herself and is not content with the life she has. Curley’s wife was not content with the life she has because she throws her life's dreams and hopes at Lennie. She thinks she’s better than everyone else because she shows off, saying the man “says I was a natural”. Then she goes on to enforce that she is not happy with the life she has when she says “I don’t like curley. He aint a nice fella” once again showing that she is not happy in marriage. This may make us feel sorry for her, if she hadn’t bought it upon herself by rushing into a marriage out of money and anger and not for love. This shows that she only cares for herself and has no regard for curleys feelings. After approaching Lennie, Curley’s wife goes on to talk about her past and what her life could have been like. “He says he was gonna put me in the movies. Says I was a natural. Soon`s he got back to hollywood he was gonna write to me about it” And then she goes on to talk about how she does not like Curley “Well, I aint told this to nobody before. Maybe I ought`n to. I don’t like curley. He aint a nice fella”. She shows she is not content with her life for what she says about Curley and what her life could have been like. She thinks she better than she is, making her big headed – We should dislike her.

She dresses inappropriately for being on the ranch. “She had full, roughed lips and wide spaced eyes, heavily made up. Her finger nails were red. Her hair hung in little rolled clusters, like sausages. She wore a cotton house dress and red mules, on the insteps of which were little bouquets of red ostrich feathers.” This is the first time we see and hear of Curleys wife and straight away she comes across as flirtatious from her description. From her “finger nails were red” to her “bouquets of red ostrich feathers”. This shows that even though she is on a ranch were the ground is the dirty and the whole area is full of mud, grit and dirt she still dresses up. She is also wearing red therefore being around a group of men wearing dull boring denim with big chunky boots on therefore she is going to stand out which is exactly what she wants; all the men to look at her. She dresses like a slut – we should dislike her.

In loving memory of Lennie Small. Rest in pea May you rest in peace.
