what can one church do? What are the MDGs?

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do?

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do? Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger One billion people live on less than $1a day. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, this boy spends every day chipping through stones in search of minerals to sell. For a flour bag of mineral-rich stones he is paid as little as 25 cents. His family and community are dependent on this industry. Target: Halve between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people whose income is less than one dollar a day. Halve between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people who suffer from hunger.

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do? Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education Rowena was three when she started work in the Philippines, digging through a garbage dump to collect recyclable materials. She’s never been to school at all. Target: Ensure that by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling.

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do? Education is fundamental to ending poverty and achieving the MDGs. Increasing a society’s level of education is positively correlated to higher standards of living. Education is a human right that everyone, regardless of socio- economic background, should enjoy.

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do? Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women At fourteen, Phally was working two jobs while her brothers went to school. Now, with the help of a small loan and some training, she runs a successful grocery business in Cambodia, employs her brothers, and can send her own daughter to school. Target: Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education to all levels of education no later than 2015.

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do? Women compose an estimated 70% of the 1 billion people living on less than $1 a day Women contribute two-thirds of all the world’s working hours Women produce half of the world’s food Women earn only 10% of the world’s income Women own less than 1% of the world’s property. Educated women are more likely to work in the formal sector, increase farm productivity, delay marriage, support gender- equality politics, and know how to prevent illness and disease Despite the importance of educating women, almost 57% of children who are not in school are girls.

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do? Goal 4: Reduce child mortality In Afghanistan each year, 283,000 children under the age of five die. Bismillah is one of the lucky ones. Suffering malnourishment and pneumonia, she was brought in time to a clinic where she’s on her way to recovery. Target: Reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under five mortality rate.

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do? -Of the yearly 10.5 million under-5 deaths, 94% occur in mostly in South Asia and sub- Saharan Africa. -The wealthiest 20% of children in poor countries are twice as likely to survive as the poorest 20% -Children whose mothers have at least a secondary education are twice as likely to survive as children with less educated mothers.

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do? Goal 5: Improve maternal health Around 529,000 women die each year giving birth. 99% are from developing countries and 80% of deaths are preventable. As a traditional birth attendant, Emily is fighting to reverse these statistics, helping with safer deliveries for hundreds of women in rural Malawi. Target: Reduce by three-quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality rate.

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do? The risk of dying during pregnancy is 1 in 16 in sub-Saharan Africa, but only 1 in 3,800 in the developed world If a woman in a poor country does beat these odds, she may very well suffer from medical complications that threaten her health and further marginalize her in society. Estimates suggest that poor maternal health and nutrition are the cause behind at least 20% of diseases affecting children under 5 Moreover, approximately 8 million babies die before or during delivery or in the first week of life because of maternal health complications. Children who lose their mothers during their birth are 10 times more likely to die by the age of 2.

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do? Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases Pedro, Rose and Chembe visit the grave of their mother who died from an HIV/AIDS illness. Their grandfather, 75, now takes care of them. Over 14 million children have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS worldwide. Target: Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS. Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases.

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do? Of new cases of HIV/AIDS, 96% are in the developing world. Sub-Saharan Africa remains the hardest hit region: it has just 10% of the world’s pop., but accounts for 64% of all HIV-positive people and 90% of all children under- 15 living with the disease. Malaria infects at least 300 million people a year It directly causes 1 million deaths, and leads to 2 million malaria-related deaths annually.

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do? Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability Every day Mame collects water for her family in Senegal. She’s lucky enough to live near a borehole. The average distance to travel for water in Africa is 6km, and some children spend up to six hours per day on this task. Target: Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programs and reverse the loss of environmental resources. Halve by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water. By 2020, to have achieved a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers.

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do? 1 billion people—do not have access to safe and sufficient drinking water 2.4 billion people lack adequate sanitation the poor are disproportionately impacted by climate change Extreme weather events are induced by climate change, making it hard to survive when natural disasters occur There can be increased occurrences and strains of disease, drought, and floods. Warmer weather can lead to the spread of malaria-infected mosquitoes, and droughts and floods significantly reduce agricultural production and lead to an increase in malnutrition.

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do? Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development In Uganda, Simon sells the harvest from a few parched coffee plants that his parents planted before their death. He has no access to global markets or opportunity for a fair price. For every $1 paid for tea at a supermarket, less than 15 cents goes to people in the country where the tea was grown.

Millennium Development Goals what can one church do? Target MDG 8 Develop further an open, rule-based, predictable, non-discriminatory trading and financial system – nationally and internationally. Deal comprehensively with the debt problems of developing countries through national and international measures in order to make debt sustainable in the long term. Address the special needs of landlocked countries and small island developing States. Address the special needs of least developed countries.
