BY MARISOL CASTELLANOS CLAS101 LATIN Horace (65-8 B.C.)

Horace actual name :Quintus Horatius Flaccus Born on December 8 th 65 B.C. in Venusia, Italy during the Roman Republic era. He was a Roman lyric poet, literary critic, and military officer during the life time of Augusts. He is generally considered one of the greatest lyric poets of the world.

Early Life As a child he lived on the borders of Lucania and Apulia. His father was a freedman and had retired on his savings to live on a small farm with Horace. As his only son his father had high ambitions for him so he took him to Rome, where he studied under the famous grammaticus Orbilius.

He later moved to Athens where he studied Greek literature and philosophy.

Short Military Career Horace accepted Brutus offer of a commission as a military tribune along with other fellow students like Cicero's son Marcus Tullius Cicero,an officer in Brutus's army. He fought in the Battle of Philippi in 42 B.C., which destroyed the army of the assassins. After the defeat at Philippi, Horace was a ruined man. His short military career was at end andhe was an officer of a defeated army.

After Military Career He dedicated himself to writing. He later meet and became friends the poets Varius and Virgil, who were then engaged in writing the Eclogues. Nine months late Maecenas, the confidential adviser of Octavian wrote to him as he was admitted to the circle of Maecenas's friends because of his great literacy writings. In 35 B.C. Horace's published his first work, Book I of his Satires. In 30 B.C. his second book was published the Epodes was published with the help Maecenas.

In 33 B.C. Maecenas presented him with a farm in the Sabine country, near Tibur (Tivoli) where he provided him with a modest competence, independence, and leisure to write. There he lived a life of comfort and retirement in the company of his books and good friends. Since he had a lot of time in his hands and he loved to write he took the time to write some of his greatest books of all times.

The Odes In 23 B.C. his first three books of the Odes were written and published. It is generally considered Horace's greatest achievement, and one of the greatest achievements of all poetry. Short lyric poetry/poems. The Odes cover a range of subjects - Love, Friendship, Wine, Religion, Morality, Patriotism; poems of eulogy addressed to Augustus and his relations, and much more.

The first book of his literary and philosophical Epistles in 20 B.C The Epistles is split into 2 books The first book contains 20 Epistles (Letters) In book 1 of the Epistle there is a epistle called and based On the Importance of Philosophy - (Dedication to Maecenas, Horace's Patron).

The second book of Epistles, published 14 B.C. Book 2 of the Epistle consists of 3 Epistles. Book 2 has a dedication to August called On Popular Taste and Judgment. Horace dedicates his second collection of Epistles to Augustus, who had apparently urged him to undertake something in the line of dramatic or epic poetry. He complains of the poor taste shown by the general public, especially in regard to the drama, and says that he is unwilling to make an attempt in that line.

He also wrote the frigid Carmen Saeculare, composed under commission to of Augustus's revival of the Secular Games in 17 B.C.

At Augustus's express request, the fourth book of the Odes was published in 13 B.C.

In the last years of his life, probably after the composition of the fourth book of the Odes, he wrote his Ars poetica.

After these major accomplishment and events during his life time he: Died on 27 November 8 B.C. (age 56) in Rome and he always remembered as one of Rome's finest poet writer.
