1. anonymous (adj) Having unknown or withheld authorship. Having an unknown or unacknowledged name. Lacking individuality, distinction or recognizability. Related Words: anonymity; anonymously. Ex: Many old poems are anonymous.

2. cognomen (noun) A name, especially a descriptive nickname acquired through usage. A family name; a surname. Ex: Because David’s favorite sport has been baseball ever since he saw his first game, his friends have given him the cognomen “Slugger.”

3. denomination (noun) The name of a class or group. A name; designation. The act of naming. An organized group of religious congregations. A class of units having specified values (coins) Ex: The girl belongs to the Methodist denomination.

4. homonym (noun) One or two words that have the same sound and often the same spelling but differ in meaning. Ex: Bear, meaning “to support” and bear, meaning “ a large omnivorous mammal,” are homonyms, but in context they are seldom confused.

5. ignominy (noun) Great personal dishonor or humiliation. Shameful or disgraceful action, conduct, or character. Related Words: ignominious Ex: In colonial times wrongdoers were often subjected to the ignominy of being tarred and feathered.

6. metonym (noun) A figure of speech in which an attribute or commonly associated feature is used to name or designate something. Ex: In the days of sailing vessels, people used metonym when they referred to shis as “sails.” Ex: Sawyer always called Kate “Freckles.”

7. misnomer (noun) A name wrongly or unsuitably applied to a person, place or thing. An error in naming a person or plac. Ex: The Thrifty Traveler is certainly a misnomer for an expensive hotel.

8. nomenclature (noun) A system of names used in the arts and sciences. Ex: The diagram gave the nomenclature for the parts of a cell.

9. nominal (adj) Existing in name only and not in actuality. Insignificantly small. Of, like, or pertaining to a name or names; bearing a person’s name. Ex: The manager’s title of consultant was a nominal one, since his colleagues rarely asked for opinions.

10. renown (noun) The quality of being widely honored and acclaimed. Related Word: renowned Ex: Because Dr. Miller was a physicist of great renown, her advice was widely sought by others in the field.
