Jan Matejko / / is one of the representatives of the Polish historical painting. He studied in Kraków, then in Munich and Vienna. He was a member of the Scientific Society and the director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. In 1887 he received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa at the Jagiellonian University. Matejko painted historical pictures to show the events of national history. His extraordinary works are characterized by a great attention to details. All the works are based on a vast historical knowledge of their author. Jan Matejko was also the greatest portraitist of history.
