“Ancient World and the Flood” part 2, Gen 4-9 & Selected Pastor Dave Martin, Cross Creek Community Church, Aug 31, 2014

HIS story - OUR story Creation, Sin, God’s Judgment, Provision and Promise

Environment Water canopy, no rain (dew & springs), warm with lush vegetation, no seasons

Topography Gentle rolling land, no high rugged mountains or deep canyons… One large landmass,,,

I. Sin Escalated in the Pre-Flood World Gen 4:1-6:13

Sons of God – ‘Nephilim’ fallen ones, cohabit w/ women… Renowned offspring Genesis 6:4 4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days--and also afterward--when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown. (Further study on this subject… Job 1:6, 2:1, 38:7; 1Pet 3:18- 22; 2Pet 2:4-5; Jude 1:6-7; Num 13:33)

People – Estimated 10B people… Common language, no system of organized laws controlling human conduct… Growing more wicked, sinful, corrupt and violent… Genesis 6:5 The Lord saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.

Genesis 6:11-13 11 Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight and was full of violence. 12 God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. V13 “the earth is filled with violence…”

Dr Henry Morris notes 11 Characteristics of the Pre-flood world…

II. God grieved, Noah found grace, Plans formulated, Gen 6:14-22

Occupants – Two of every kind animal and Noah, his three sons & their wives Genesis 6:6,8 6 The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain… 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

Genesis 7:7,15 7 And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood… 15 Pairs of all creatures that have the breath of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark.

Ark of Salvation – 450’X75’X45’, one door, three decks totaling 100,000sf, w/ ventilation… Carry 14,000 tons, 522 modern railroad boxcars…

Genesis 6:14-16 14 So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch [atonement] inside and out. 15 This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high. 16 Make a roof for it and finish the ark to within 18 inches of the top. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks.

Genesis 6:22 22 Noah did everything just as God commanded him.

III. God’s Righteous Judgment: Global Flood, Gen7:1-8:14

Devastation – Aquifers burst forth, water canopy collapses and rains 40 days, earthquakes, Tsunamis, water, climate change, death… Extensive fossil record Genesis 7:11-12 11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, on the seventeenth day of the second month--on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. 12 And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.

Genesis 7:23 23 Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out [not all fish]; men and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds of the air were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark.

Record of the flood is found in the history of EVERY ancient civilization culture…

IV. God Blesses, Promises and gives Instructions, Gen 8:15-9:29 Repopulate, Rainbow, Rules

Blessing & Filling Genesis 9:1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.

Promise Genesis 9:13-15 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth… Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.

Food Genesis 9:3 Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.

Human Government Genesis 9:5-6 5 “… And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man. 6 "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man.

HIS story… Preserving the lineage of Jesus the Messiah Luke 3:23-38 23 “How Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph, the son of Heli… 36 the son of Noah… 38 the son of Adam, the son of God”

Jesus said… Matthew 24:37-39 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

Before the flood waters Enoch was taken… Genesis 5:24 24 Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away…

Before the flood waters Enoch was taken… Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.

Before the Tribulation period all believers will be taken… 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed-- 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

“HIS story – OUR story” NOW is the time… Be ready to meet Jesus! Be reaching the lost! “HIS story – OUR story”
