The Five Senses
All About the Eye Are the most complex organs you possess except for your brain. Are composed of more than two million working parts. Can instantaneously set in motion hundreds of muscles and organs in your body. Eyes are your most precious sense Menu
All About the Nose No two people smell the same odor the same way. In other words, a rose may smell sweeter to some people than to others. The average human being is able to recognize approximately 10,000 different odors. Our sense of taste is greatly influenced by our sense of smell. Your sense of smell is least acute in the morning; our ability to perceive odors increases as the day wears on. Menu
All About the Ear In the course of hearing, sound waves enter the auditory canal and strike the eardrum, causing it to vibrate. Sounds that are 85 decibels or louder such as heavy traffic, a noisy restaurant, a screaming child, or a lawn mower can cause hearing damage Once you have lost your hearing it’s gone! Menu
All About the Tongue There are approximately 9,000 taste buds on the tongue. Your tastes will change as you get older. Your taste buds will become less sensitive. The appearance of the tongue is often an indication of body health; a pinkish-red color is normal. In impairment of the digestion and in certain feverish diseases, a yellowish coating forms. Taste is the weakest of the five senses. Menu
All About Touch While your other four senses (sight, hearing, smell, and taste) are located in specific parts of the body, your sense of touch is found all over. Your sense of touch originates in the bottom layer of your skin called the dermis. The nerve endings in your skin can tell you if something is hot or cold. Pain receptors are probably the most important for your safety because they can protect you by warning your brain that your body is hurt! There are about 100 touch receptors in each of your fingertips. Menu
