Thursday – April 23, 2015 Entry Task  Silent reading Agenda Review multiple choice test strategies Summary vs. analysis – Take notes Common Assessment #3 Homework: 1.Come in to retake the run-on/frag test!!! 2.Resubmissions due TOMORROW!

You will need… Multiple choice handout from yesterday Pen/pencil LA Notebook

Learning Targets I will review the multiple choice test-taking strategies I can identify the differences between a Summary and Analysis

Success Criteria Students will have… …explained multiple-choice strategies to a partner …closely read examples of summary and analysis …taken common assessment #3

Summary vs. analysis (CM) 1.What is a chunk? – 1 CD + 2CMs – Analysis, opinion, inference 2.What is a summary ? – Briefly retelling/describing the events in a story 3.What is the difference between the 2? – Chunks have an opinion and summary is only describing

Lets try to tell the difference… Read each example and write in your paper whether it is analysis or summary then explain why you think this. A.Juliet explains the smell of a rose when she says, “What’s in a name? That which we would call a rose By any other word would smell as sweet” ( ). A rose can still smell sweet even if it is called something else. B.Juliet explains the smell of a rose when she says, “What’s in a name? That which we would call a rose By any other word would smell as sweet” ( ), which shows that she believes names are unimportant because a rose does not smell sweet due to its name.

A.Summary – Juliet explains the smell of a rose when she says, “What’s in a name? That which we would call a rose By any other word would smell as sweet” ( ). A rose can still smell sweet even if it is called something else. B.Analysis – What words help us understand that this is opinion? – Juliet explains the smell of a rose when she says, “What’s in a name? That which we would call a rose By any other word would smell as sweet” ( ), which shows that she believes names are unimportant because a rose does not smell sweet due to its name.

Lets try again… Read each example and write in your paper whether it is analysis or summary then explain why you think this. C.Contact is necessary in football. Players want to be in possession of the ball by any means necessary which often means tackling each other. The defensive end attacks the passer in order to acquire the ball for his team. D.Contact is necessary in football. Players want to be in possession of the ball by any means necessary which often means tackling each other. The defensive end is the most important member of the defense because it is his job to get the offense back on the field to score.
