What do we use plant oils for? Make up Food Fuel Medicine Lubricants Paints Foam Toothpaste Soaps Henna which makes henna oil – used as a medicine

What does solubility mean? Do oils dissolve in water? How easily a substance dissolves NO Eucalyptus tree which makes eucalyptus oil – Used in cough medicine Ylang-ylang which makes ylang-ylang oil – Used as an antiseptic

EMULSION What is the substance called when oil and water are combined? What is diffusion? Means by which gaseous particles move through the air The movement of particles from an area of low concentration to an area of low concentration Rose which makes rose oil – Used as a fragrance Mentha arvensis which makes mint oil – Used in toothpaste

Why do flowers smell nice? To attract pollinators Plants need to attract insects, bats and hummingbirds to transfer the pollen and create fertile seeds Spruce trees which make spruce oil – This is useful for improving breathing conditions What is meant by the term volatile? If a liquid evaporates easily Iris This is used in fragrances

Why do we like the smell of flowers? That's got to do with our sense of smell. This is the sense that makes us aware of the chemicals in our environment, and the brain marks them as good or bad smells. Chemicals that are bad for us (like ammonia or hydrogen sulphide) smell bad, so we avoid them. Chemicals that are good for us (like the natural chemicals of food) smell nice. That's why we walk away from a gutter and walk towards a nice smelling cup of coffee! Our brains treat the smells from flowers and fruits as attractive, because it often implies that there is good food to be found with them. Cymbopogan which makes citronella oil – This is useful for repelling mosquitoes What is the process called when we to extract plant oils? Distillation Tea tree oil – extracted from Melaleuca alternifolia This is used in medicines
