Poetry and Figurative Language Literary Devices

Literary Terms Imagery - the use of words and phrases that appeal to the five senses.  Writers use sensory details to help readers imagine how things look, feel, smell, sound, and taste. Loneliness seems golden yellow Like the hazy colors fall days bring I see the leaves of red I hear the birds announce themselves I smell burning leaves that signal the end I touch no one, for I stand alone I taste the salt of my tears

Written Response #2 : Your Turn to Practice Imagery STOP PERIOD 4 Imagery is not only used in poetry, it is used in all types of writing. Go back to written response #1 from today. Rewrite your entry adding words to created tone and mood. Remember: Appeal to the 5 senses Looks like… Smells like… Sounds like…. Tastes like… Feels like… When you are finished, Highlight the words that Add imagery to your writing.

Practice With Imagery Writers use imagery to appeal to the senses. They do this by adding details about color, texture, scent, and so forth. The same idea can often be presented in different ways, to appeal to different senses. The sentence below gives a straightforward description of an event. As the snow fell, she walked down the street with a cup of hot chocolate. Rewrite the sentence 5 times, using words that appeal to each of the 5 senses: hearing, smell, touch, taste, and sight.

WNB Tuesday Describe how you feel right now using your sense of smell. If you are happy right now, describe what your happiness smells like. Use vivid words and lots of adjectives.
