Life Cycle EggCaterpillar PupaButterfly Caterpillar

Some butterflies lay more than 1,000 eggs at a time. Every butterfly begins life as an egg the size of a pinhead. The monarch butterfly lays her eggs on a milkweed leaf. Just over a week later the eggs begin to hatch. A small caterpillar crawls out of the egg shell. -Vickkeyah Egg

The caterpillar needs food in order to grow. It folds up a leaf and sticks together with silk. When a caterpillar hatches it eats its egg shell. It grows quickly so it needs to eat lots of leaves. -Elijah Caterpillar

A caterpillar hatches from an egg. The caterpillar eats plants. The caterpillar grows and molts. It crawls out of its old skin. The caterpillar molts four or five times. The caterpillar hangs upside down and then becomes a chrysalis. The chrysalis will become a butterfly. -Kalayah Caterpillar

After a caterpillar is fully grown it will become a pupa. It hangs inside a hard shell called a chrysalis. Inside the shell it undergoes metamorphosis, or change. When it is ready, a butterfly comes out of the shell. -Cole Pupa

Butterflies taste with their feet. Birds don’t eat some types of butterflies. Butterflies can start from Iowa and go all the way to Mexico. -Emma Butterfly

Eating / Feeding Caterpillar Eating HabitsButterfly Eating Habits Feeding Facts

A caterpillar hatches from an egg. Sometimes the caterpillar eats its old skin after shedding. The caterpillar eats many leaves. It grows quickly. -Cory Caterpillar Eating Habits

A butterfly has no jaws so it can’t eat solid food. Butterflies drink nectar from flowers. They also drink juices from fruit. To help them drink, butterflies have a straw like body part called a proboscis. In really hot areas butterflies will gather on wet ground to sip up water. -Erica Butterfly Feeding Habits

Butterflies eat different food during each life stage. Caterpillars chew out of their egg shells. They eat plants around them. Caterpillars eat leaves, grass, flowers, and weeds. Some like milkweed. Butterflies drink instead of eating. They cannot chew food and they taste with their feet. They use a proboscis. -Jaxon Feeding Facts

Body Parts Antennae Proboscis WingsAbdomen Legs

Antennae help the butterfly to smell and to feel. They balance. The butterfly’s antennae are used for smelling. -Brandon Antennae

A proboscis is a tongue that is shaped like a tube. A butterfly uses it to drink nectar from flowers. When a butterfly is not drinking, it rolls up its proboscis under its head. -Shellmeesha Proboscis

An adult butterfly has three pairs of legs attached to its abdomen. The caterpillar has these too. It also has five extra pairs of legs called prolegs. The caterpillar will lose these when it changes into an adult. -Madison Legs

Butterflies have four wings. They slowly open as they dry. Wings for a monarch butterfly are dark orange with black lines and white spots. -Maurice Wings

The abdomen is one of a butterfly’s three main parts. The abdomen is where eggs are produced in females. The abdomen is at the back of the butterfly’s body. -Kyree Abdomen
