Keminmaa The Alternative Sources of Energy in the Keminmaa Region

Hydro power

Generaatto ri- Generator Sulku-Lock Välpät- Sieve Turbiini- Turbine

 Hydro power is the use of water as a source of energy  It is one of the most significant sources of energy in Finland

 Hydro power covers about 10-20% of the production of electricity  In Finland we have over 220 hydro power plants

 The closest hydro power plant is Isohaara in Keminmaa

Windpower

 By the end of 2012 there were 145 windmills in Finland.  The windmills cover about 1% of the energy comsumption in Finland  The windmills are located by the coast.  Our closest plants are in the neughbouring cities, in Tornio, Kemi and Simo, for example.

The oldest windmill in Finland The first windmill was built in Turku in By the end of the 16th century there were hundreds of windmills. The closest oldfashioned windmill is in a museum in Keminmaa.

Solar power

Solar energy comes from the Sun. Because of our location in the north, we can´t use solar energy very much. Solar power is mostly used in private households.

 Geothermal energy is the heat from the Earth.  It´s clean and sustainable.  In Finland the resources of geothermal energy range from the shallow ground to about 15 metres beneath the Earth´s surface.  Geothermal heat pumps use much less energy than conventional heating systems.

Biomass energy

 Produced from biomass.  Reduces the discharge of greenhouse gases.

1)Forest energy o logging residues, small trees, wood o In year 2010;covered over 3% of Finland’s overall consumption of energy. 2) Field energy o Energy plants o Reed canary grass, hemp, oil plants o Plants are especially grown for energy purposies Sources of biomass
