The Hole Story A Birder’s Version of The Two Minute Drill By Jeff Culler
A wintering male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (YBSA) returns.
On 1/22/09, of five holes, one, two, and three have sap flow.
He begins digging in hole five.
Moves over …
and digs in hole four.
He cuts an outline,
… the start of a new sap hole.
Chipping exposes softer wood beneath.
He works on the new hole. Note the falling wood chip.
Now it’s a six hole row.
He continues to drill…
and dig into the new hole.
Head back to drill.
Head forward to dig.
Thirteen photos in two minutes, beginning at 10:16 a.m. At 10:18 a.m. he moves to another area of the tree. He returns at 10:19 a.m. to a six hole row.
The new hole is already oozing sap.
A very productive two minute drill. Sap wells as of 2/2/09.Previous photos on 1/22/09.
And that’s THE HOLE STORY.
