Every part looks like it belongs together By clever use – play up your good features & conceal those that are not Right design - thinner, taller, thinner or heavier

Elements of Design Elements of Design – color, line texture and form If right elements of design used – success Apply when making choices

Color Very exciting part of our lives! Major influence on how you select clothes Reflects the your moods, looks & feelings Right color – skin will glow & eyes will shine Best features can be highlighted when you use your best colors Turquoise is the color of 2010, fashion experts say

The Language of Color Hue – name given to color (yellow, red, blue) Value – the amount of lightness or darkness in a color Different values result by adding black or white Tint – add white to a color Pink is a tint of red Shade – made by adding black Navy – blue Maroon - red

The Language of Color Intensity – brightness or dullness of a color Bright colors – intense (bright green (kelly green) Pale colors – softer & less intense (mint green) vs

The Color Wheel Color wheel – shows how colors relate to each other Red, blue & yellow – primary color No other colors can be mixed to make them All other colors can be made by primary colors Yellow + blue = green Red + blue = violet (purple) Red + yellow = orange Green, violet, & orange = secondary colors Intermediate colors – combination of a primary & a secondary color Blue-green, red-orange, yellow-green

Color Worksheet You may use crayons, markers or color pencils to fill in the circle or you may write the color Turn in worksheet in the assignment box If you need assistance, please refer to the book page 361

Color Schemes You can create one Three common: Monochromatic Based on variations of a single hue on the color wheel Analogous Combining related colors (colors next to one another) Complementary Combination of two colors directly across from each other

Warm & Cool Colors Warm colors – colors related to red, orange & yellow Advancing colors – seem to come forward Cool colors – colors related to blue, violet, & green Restful, calm, relaxing Receding colors - seem to move away or stay in the background You can look thinner in cool colors than in warm colors

Neutrals White, gray & black Use alone or combination w/others When used w/a small amount of a color, the other color looks brighter White – reflects light – objects appear larger Clothes will feel cooler Popular for warmer climates Black - absorbs light – objects appear smaller Clothes feel warmer Often worn during the winter/cold temps

Color Schemes Worksheet Use crayons, markers or clippings from a magazine to complete the worksheet Complete Design crossword – use the book and/or your terms you did on Monday

Choosing the BEST Color Important decision

Colors for your skin tone Most important consideration Five basic skin tones: Black, red-brown, yellow-brown, yellow, & white How to find out: In daylight, drape different colors of fabric over your shoulders in front of a mirror Study the effects of each color has on your skin Tints & shades = different effects Color = overpower – try a duller intensity You LOVE a color that does not go with your skin Still wear it, but keep away from face, skirts, pants

Colors for your Hair 2nd consideration Right colors – hair – glow Four main hair colors Blond, red, brunette & black Colors much lighter or darker than hair will emphasize the hair color!!! Rich brown or glossy black hairs looks darker with light values Brown outfit will not emphasize brown hair Since contrasting colors make each seem brighter – red hair looks great with a soft green color

Colors for your Eyes Various eye color Some eye color (hazel, blue-green & gray) seem to change color when various colors are worn They reflect the garment that is worn Brown eyes – seldom influenced by color Blue eyes – become brighter or are dulled by other blues A large amount bright blue colors dull blue eyes, a small amount makes them brighter color intensity – important factor when choosing color

Body Shape

Colors for your Body Shape Use colors to play up or conceal certain body features Warm, bold, white, light & bright colors tend to make a area seem larger than it is. They draw attention Wide belts in light colors will make a waist line appear smaller Dull or less intense colors should be used in areas you would like to hid Short – look taller in one-color outfits. no belt – makes you look taller Eye will move in a continuous line down the body belt – same color as garment

Colors for your Body Shape Combining colors – avoid contrasts – short Colors stop & start abruptly Shirt – one color pant- another color – causes a break in the vertical line of the body More slender – grayed, dull & dark colors Avoid looking dull Bright color in accessories

Colors & Your Personality Personality has an effect on the color you choose – you may not be aware of it The way color make you feel – part of personality Warm colors – outgoing, active Feel cheerful, energetic – bright colors Others may feel awkward Plain-colored clothes – may be quiet & reserved

Line Gives direction to a design Structural – created by the seams in a garment Decorative – are part of the fabric design or trims added to the garment Rows of button Lines can be vertical (up & down), horizontal (across), diagonal (slanting) or curved (part of a circle) Used separate or in a combination

Selecting Your Best Lines Lines = illusions Vertical lines – carry eye up and down, sliming effect, taller effect Horizontal lines – carry eyes from side to side, make you look shorter & heavier Wide belt – horizontal line Diagonal lines – add interest to a design Slanted more up than down – seem taller Curved lines – give a soft, relaxed look

Texture How a fabric feel when you touch it and how it looks on the surface Bulky fabric – add weight Dull fabric – decrease visual weight or size Effects color – shiny textures-colors seem brighter

Form Refers to a shape of an object Clothes helps to create your shape (silhouette) Clothing producing a full form – larger & heavier (wide-leg jeans)
