Presentation transcript:

Then John's disciples came and asked him, "How is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?" Jesus answered, "How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast. "No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.“

While he was saying this, a ruler came and knelt before him and said, "My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live." Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples. Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, "If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed." Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed from that moment.

When Jesus entered the ruler's house and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd, he said, "Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep." But they laughed at him. After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up. News of this spread through all that region. Matthew 9: (NIV)

John’s disciples ask Jesus about his and his disciples observance of fasting.

The LORD said to Moses, "The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves, and present an offering made to the LORD by fire. Do no work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the LORD your God. Anyone who does not deny himself on that day must be cut off from his people. I will destroy from among his people anyone who does any work on that day. You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live. It is a sabbath of rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath.“ Leviticus 23:26-32 (NIV)

To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men— robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.' "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.' "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.“ Luke 18: 9-14 (NIV)

John’s disciples ask Jesus about his and his disciples observance of fasting. Clearly the Jews of Jesus’ day saw fasting as a method of discipline and self improvement.

John’s disciples ask Jesus about his and his disciples observance of fasting. Clearly the Jews of Jesus’ day saw fasting as a method of discipline and self improvement. Furthermore, John’s disciples saw Jesus as a reformer within the Jewish tradition. This gives Jesus the opportunity to announce who he truly is.

Then John's disciples came and asked him, "How is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?" Jesus answered, "How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast. Jesus does not repudiate fasting.

Instead, he announces that his presence makes fasting unnecessary at the present time.

Jesus does not repudiate fasting. Instead, he announces that his presence makes fasting unnecessary at the present time. He also announces that his ministry simply cannot be contained in the form of Judaism which had been practiced up until that time.

After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up. News of this spread through all that region. Matthew 9: (NIV)

Both of these miracles demonstrate Jesus' power over the outside world.

First, the woman with an issue of blood would not have had a life threatening condition, but she would have been unclean.

" 'When a woman has a discharge of blood for many days at a time other than her monthly period or has a discharge that continues beyond her period, she will be unclean as long as she has the discharge, just as in the days of her period. Any bed she lies on while her discharge continues will be unclean, as is her bed during her monthly period, and anything she sits on will be unclean, as during her period. Whoever touches them will be unclean; he must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean till evening. Leviticus 15:25-27 (NIV)

Both of these miracles demonstrate Jesus' power over the outside world. First, the woman with an issue of blood would not have had a life threatening condition, but she would have been unclean. Jesus takes no offense at her actions, instead he heals her.

Both of these miracles demonstrate Jesus' power over the outside world. Second, a corpse was unclean.

The LORD said to Moses, "Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has an infectious skin disease or a discharge of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean because of a dead body. Send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.“ Numbers 5:1-3 (NIV)

Both of these miracles demonstrate Jesus' power over the outside world. Second, a corpse was unclean. Jesus cleanses the situation by restoring life.

Both of these miracles demonstrate Jesus' power over the outside world. Throughout Matthew 8 and 9 Jesus acts as something of a cleansing virus.

Both of these miracles demonstrate Jesus' power over the outside world. Throughout Matthew 8 and 9 Jesus acts as something of a cleansing virus. Jesus reverses the attitude which says, “the unclean will contaminate me.”

Do we believe that we have been infected with the cleansing power Jesus brought?
