Facts about poor Tudor food Most poor people ate pottage Pottage is a stew made using oats and vegetables They never ate potatoes They lit fires with coal They believed they shouldn’t eat fruit raw

They had really big plants. The people in Tudor times ate lots of sweets and they coloured the sweets with vegetable dye. They had really big plants.

They used salt to preserve their food. They ate lots of biscuits and cheese and the poor people ate from wooden bowls. Poor people could only afford ginger at Christmas.

In the kitchen villagers used metal cauldrons and other cooking pots. A Tudor gingerbread biscuit was very expensive. Most poor people would not make biscuits like this except as a Christmas treat. In the kitchen villagers used metal cauldrons and other cooking pots.
