John 7:1-9John 7:1-9Jesus’ & God’s Timing John 7:10-13John 7:10-13Jesus goes to The Feast This Week January 27, 2015 Lesson 16 - John 7:1-13 6

1 After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. 2 Now the Jews' Feast of Booths was at hand. 3 So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For not even his brothers believed in him. 6 Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” 9 After saying this, he remained in Galilee. John 7:1-13John 7:1-13 (ESV) God’s Timing & The Feast January 27, 2015 Lesson 16 - John 7:1-13 7

10 But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. 11 The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” 12 And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.” 13 Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him. What is the “Feast of Booths” or “Feast of Tabernacles”? Sukkot, Feast of Booths or Feast of Tabernacles is a biblical Jewish holiday celebrated on dates which vary from late September to late October based on the annual Jewish calendar. It is one of the three pilgrimage festivals for which Israelites would make a pilgrimage to the temple in Jerusalem. The holiday lasts seven (7) days in Israel. 13 January 27, 2015 Lesson 16 - John 7:1-13 John 7:1-13 God’s Timing & The Feast

The Hebrew word sukkōt is the plural of sukkah, "booth" or "tabernacle", which is a walled structure covered with s'chach (plant material such as overgrowth or palm leaves). The sukkah is intended as a reminiscence of the type of fragile dwellings in which, according to the torah, the Israelites dwelt during their 40 years of travel in the desert after the Exodus from slavery in Egypt. Throughout the holiday, meals are eaten inside the sukkah and many people sleep there as well. A sukkah is also the name of the temporary dwelling in which agricultural workers would live during harvesting. January 27, 2015 Lesson 16 - John 7: John 7:1-13 God’s Timing & The Feast

Approximately, how much time has likely passed between the activities in John chapter 6 and the beginning of John chapter 7? (see John 6:4)John 6:4 How many people were likely around Jesus between John chapters 6 and 7? (see John 6:66-67).John 6:66-67 January 27, 2015 Lesson 16 - John 7: John 7:1-13 God’s Timing & The Feast

Who were Jesus’ brothers (half brothers)? James, Joseph, Simon and Judas (Matthew 13:53-56)Matthew 13:53-56 Did His brothers represent “believers” in these passages? January 27, 2015 Lesson 16 - John 7: John 7:1-13 God’s Timing & The Feast

Are Jesus’ brothers and His disciples who were around Him at the time following the same timetable as Jesus in progressing His ministry? Do we also often want to follow a timetable that varies with God’s timetable? Did Jesus foresee that when His time came to present His teachings in Jerusalem that His teachings would be well received? (John 7:7)John 7:7 January 27, 2015 Lesson 16 - John 7: John 7:1-13 God’s Timing & The Feast

Was there a consensus viewpoint about who Jesus was at this time? (See John 7:12)John 7:12 Were any of the viewpoints accurate? Was anyone willing to speak out in support of Jesus at this time? (See John 7:13)John 7:13 January 27, 2015 Lesson 16 - John 7: John 7:1-13 God’s Timing & The Feast

Application & Discussion 1.Can you discuss any specific examples in your life when your timing was at odds with God’s timing? What was the result? 2.What steps can you currently take to identify God’s timing? 3.In light of Jesus presenting His message to a hostile audience, are there any opportunities for you to share your testimony with groups that may not be receptive to your message?
