RWinter is one of the four seasons. RIt starts on the 21st of December and ends on the 20th of March. RWinter brings cold weather and shorter days.

RThe four seasons are a result of the Earth tilting on its axis. The earth is tilted toward and away from the sun at different times of the year. RSo we have the seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

RThe polar regions are very, very cold during Winter. The sun does not rise for weeks or even months at a time.

RIn the Northern Hemisphere, winter begins on the 21st December and ends on the 20th March. December 21st is the shortest day of the year. RThe Northern Hemisphere includes all the countries North of the equator.

RIn the Southern Hemisphere, winter begins on the 21st June and ends on the 20th September. RThe Southern Hemisphere includes all the countries South of the equator.

We expect the weather to be Rchilly Rwindy Rrainy and stormy

RWe wear warm and thick clothing. RWe wear… coats, scarves, hats, mittens, boots.

RWe eat more energy giving food during the cold weather. RHot soups and puddings are delicious.

RWe heat our home to make it more cosy and comfortable.

And we all dream of making a snowman and having fun on the snow!

RDeciduous trees shed their leaves in winter. REvergreen trees keep their leaves all the year round.

RHibernation is the time when some animals fall into a deep sleep or rest for the Winter. RWhen the weather turns cold they find caves, burrows and other places to keep warm.

RWhen winter comes to an end, the days become warmer. The animals start to come out of hibernation. RThey leave their caves, dens, burrows or where they have been sleeping and go outside. RThey are much thinner. They begin to look for food.

RWhen cold weather approaches, ladybirds hide in many different places. They hide under loose tree bark, in old trees, in corners of wooden sheds. RWhen the weather warms up in the springtime, ladybirds become active again. Many ladybirds can be found in the garden on plants and flowers. They can often be seen in clusters on fences.

RMigration is the movement of some animals, usually in large groups, from one home to another. RThey get out of cold areas when winter is coming. By going to warmer countries, they are able to find food and stay warm. RIf they could not do this, they would probably die.

Winter has many wonderful holidays celebrated around the world.

RChildren and adults send or give cards, gifts, flowers and sweets to their family and friends. RIt is a special time to tell those around you how much you care about them.

It is the time for laughter, food and... fun!

In February, we celebrate the feast of Saint Paul, one of our national feasts.
