The First Epistle of John June 12, 2011 Bob Eckel 1 Practice of Love vs. Hatred - I John 3:13-15 I John 3:13 “Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you.” –Do not marvel – present imperative here meaning ‘cease wondering’ John 3:7 "Do not marvel that I said to you, `You must be born again.' –Note who is being addressed here –Define hate - μισ έ ω, miseō In my opinion this is a term that is self-defining and no further description is necessary. Is not Cain an excellent example here – I John 3:12 –world - kosmos Scofield – ‘This world-system is imposing and powerful with armies and fleets; is often outwardly religious, scientific, cultured, and elegant; but, seething with national and commercial rivalries and ambitions, is upheld in any real crisis only by armed force, and is dominated by Satanic principles (force, greed, selfishness, ambition, and pleasure).’ if, ε ἶ - 1 st class condition and used in the present tense –Thus, assumes the reality of the premise

The First Epistle of John June 12, 2011 Bob Eckel 2 Practice of Love vs. Hatred - I John 3:13-15 –What does this really mean and look like? –Do you feel like you’re being hated by the world? –Does the world hate us and/or the cross? John 7:7 “The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil.” John 15:18 "If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.” II Tim 3:12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. I John 3:14 “We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love [his] brother abides in death.” –This is an emphatic statement. –What Greek know do you think is used here? Why would eidō (fact) rather than ginōskō (personal experience) be used in this context? –Note the condition – because we love the brethren! »And what is the source of such love?

The First Epistle of John June 12, 2011 Bob Eckel 3 Practice of Love vs. Hatred - I John 3:13-15 »It doesn’t say how are you doing loving the brethren –Notice the contrary. 1 John 2:9 He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. 1 John 4:20 If someone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? –passed from death to life John 5:24 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. Col 1:13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, –his brother – this phrase is omitted from many translations –abides in death – unsaved? No, this is written to the brethren –We’re talking about fellowship here!

The First Epistle of John June 12, 2011 Bob Eckel 4 Practice of Love vs. Hatred - I John 3:13-15 I John 3:15 “Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.” –Again, Cain as an example. –And Esau too Genesis 27:41 So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, "The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob." –Whosoever hates … is a murderer Present active participle Think of hates here as absence of love –And this usually falls far short of murder »And relates to its source ‘In other words they have the germs from which murder springs lurking in their heart’ – People’s NT John 8:44 "You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from

The First Epistle of John June 12, 2011 Bob Eckel 5 Practice of Love vs. Hatred - I John 3:13-15 his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” –and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him know is again eidō Again, should this make us question our salivation? –Be honest now, have you ever been in a position to want someone dead albeit transiently? –If not, translate this into other mind sets or acts of the sin nature! –Let’s turn to the Sermon on the Mount for a minute here. »Matt 5:21,22 "You have heard that it was said to those of old, `You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment. "But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, `Raca!' shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, `You fool!' shall be in danger of hell fire.’ –Fellowship, fellowship, fellowship! –And no murderer has eternal life abiding in him is identification truth before salvation and conditional in the believer. –But we have been born again to abide in incorruptible seed. 1 Peter 1:23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,
