Why Practice Phrases?  These adapted phrases contain some of the first 100 words from the Fry Instant Word List (1980), which represent 50 percent of all the words children encounter in elementary school reading.  Repeated reading of these phrases helps your child practice reading high-frequency words and developing fluency and general proficiency.  Reading these phrases should not take the place of reading real books! Please continue to read and have your child read every night!

What is fluent reading? As you read these phrases, remember, fluent reading is not reading as fast as you can! Fluent reading is: Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately and quickly. Fluent readers read aloud effortlessly and with expression. Their reading sounds natural, as if they are speaking. Readers who have not yet developed fluency read slowly, word by word. Their oral reading is choppy. Taken from Rockets.org

Think about a race car!  If a race car goes too slow, it will lose the race.  If a race car goes too fast, it will crash!  But if a race car goes at a good speed, it will win the race!!

Get ready to read these phrases  Read these phrases in a fluent manner, not to fast and not too slow!  When you are done all the phrases, go back and read them again.  Practice these phrases until they are easy!

Ready… Get set… GO!!

You and I

No way!

One or two?

This is a cat.

Sit down.

Not me.

Not now.

Will you be good?

Then we will go.

That dog is big.

I like him.

We were here.

Could you go?

So there you are!

Up in the air.

He has it!

With his mom

Go down.

Did you like it?

She said to go.

Can you see?

This is my cat.

Get on.

Did you see it?

Look up.

Get it.

The big cat

She said to go.

I see you.
