Presentation: Peter Clifton, Product Manager, Medite Tricoya The next generation of panel products with a 60 year service life for exterior and interior wet applications

 What is wood modification via acetylation method?  What is Medite Tricoya Extreme  What tests have been done on Medite Tricoya Extreme  What are Medite Tricoya Extreme’s leading uses?

 Acetylation effectively changes the free hydroxyls within the wood into stable and moisture resistant Acetyl groups. This is done by reacting the wood with acetic anhydride, which derived from Acetic Acid (vinegar)  Acetylation dramatically improves the fibreboards durability, stability, coatings performance and service life What is wood modification via acetylation method? Description of Acetylation Acetylated wood element

What is wood modification via acetylation method? The MDF Process Acetylated wood element

What is Medite Tricoya Extreme? In this section we will cover the following topics:  The performance benefits  Warranty  Environmental credentials  Technical properties

What is Medite Tricoya Extreme? Performance benefits

 Up to 50 year warranty on panel stability and decay performance  Resistant to fungal decay  Resistant to termite attack  BBA Assessment (M )

What is Medite Tricoya Extreme? Performance benefits  Non-toxic acetylation process  Formaldehyde free resin system  Meets CARB2 emission limits  Non hazardous material – product could be recycled  FSC ® certified

What is Medite Tricoya Extreme? Health & Safety of Acetylated wood fibreboard  Non hazardous material  Normal vac extraction for wood dust can be used  Compliant with standard factory working conditions  Material safety data sheet available at

 Exceeds wood panels  Comparable to non-wood Stability test Medite ® Tricoya ® Extreme What tests have been done on Medite Tricoya Extreme?

Extreme Durable MDF excels in outdoor environments Freeze/thaw cycles: 3 hours water soak at 20ºC 3 hours freezing at -20ºC Wet/Dry cycles: 18 hours storage in water (>5ºC) 6 hours storage at 60ºC/20%RH X 25 Image: 12mm panel before durability test cycles What tests have been done on Medite Tricoya Extreme? Accelerated Exterior Weathering Test

 No cracks, or delamination in Freeze / Thaw cycles.  Significantly improved dimensional stability performance in all dimensions through cycles Image: 12mm panel after durability test cycles What tests have been done on Medite Tricoya Extreme? Accelerated Exterior Weathering Test

 Testing undertaken by SP Sweden further supports the BRE’s findings of Medite Tricoya Extreme having class 1 durability, equivalent to slow grown Teak, with excellent stability and being capable of a 60 year service life for exterior use. Fabricating The panel may be cut, machined and used in exactly the same way as the rest of the Medite (MDF) range. Coating Conventional water-based paint coatings may be used to decorate the panel. Laminating Melamine papers, high pressure laminates and foils can be adhered to the product. Sanding The acetylated wood fibreboard panel is delivered ex-mill with a 150 grit sanded finish and can be sanded with fine sandpaper to achieve a smooth finish. What tests have been done on Medite Tricoya Extreme? Processing Medite Tricoya Extreme can be cut, coated, coloured, sanded, glued, machined and fastened the same as any other high performing wood fibreboard – allowing users all the freedom normally associated with MDF but in extreme applications. Gluing Since acetylated MDF is drier than other wood panel products and absorbs water in a different manner, curing times of adhesives may be different. Recommended adhesives are PU, Epoxy, PRF and EPI. Fixing Due to some residual acetic acid in the panel, stainless steel fasteners & fixings with A2 or A4 (EN1008-1) quality or AISI type 304 or 316 should be used Fire rating Panels achieve a fire class rating of euro class D within the Euro classification as with most wood- based panel products

Coating performance warranties  A number of coating manufacturers have successfully trialled the acetylated wood fibreboard  These coating companies now offer extended coating warranties on exterior joinery and cladding manufactured from Medite Tricoya Extreme and with a fully factory finished approved system.  Warranties of up to years respectively on opaque finishes  Other leading coating companies are working on their own testing and warranties

Service life cost evaluated the service life cost of cladding:  Initial cost of coated MTE in line with coated exterior grade plywood  MTE has much lower cost during total service life than exterior graded plywood due to low long maintenance intervals  Financial advantage from a very early stage on  No need for replacement or re- pair when maintenance is poor BMTRADA
