Melvin Henry Center; Our Mission and Vision Walter Zimmerman; Founding Manager/Executive Director Melvin Henry Center: Melvin Henry Center’s mission is to serve adults with disabilities by expanding their access to workforce skills training, safe on the job learning experiences, and independent living options. Our vision is to increase the number of employment and living options available to adults in need by renovating and maintaining abandoned properties for use as accredited trades training laboratories, small business development centers, and independent living facilities.

Melvin Henry Center: Fulfilling our Vision Melvin Henry Center began fulfilling its vision in Jan at the beginning of renovations at 6872 Winchester Ave. Inwood, WV. To date, all materials for renovations and labor for construction have been through private contributions of money and time. Click Here for more about Melvin Henry Center; InwoodClick Here

It has been the volunteer efforts of contractors and individuals supporting our mission that have completed the tasks necessary to make application as a NCCER Accredited Training Facility. A super thank you/thank you for the hard work and confidence in Melvin Henry Center’s ability to fulfill its mission. Melvin Henry Center; Volunteer Accomplishments

Melvin Henry Center: Hands On Training Melvin Henry Center’s learning lab is designed as a “living classroom” that simulates real life job tasks and problem solving strategies. One example of our “living classroom” design is a removable tub and shower activity Students enrolled into Melvin Henry Center’s NCCER Plumbing class remove the bathtub and replace it with a stand up shower. This activity requires the students to: 1) cut PVC pipe; 2) remove tub and framing; 3) install stand up shower on right corner; and 4) connect PVC pipe. The tight working spaces provide students with the practical

Other examples of hands on job training include the installation of soffit vents and blown cellulose insulation activities Melvin Henry Center; Inwood Once renovations are complete and the facilities are accredited, students will calculate required attic ventilations and install appropriate venting, along with dense packing a floor with blown cellulose insulation according to Dept of Energy protocols(left) Interior walls of the lab will are designed for the student’s identification of thermal and pressure boundaries (right) Interior walls of the lab will have wooden clap board, vinyl, and aluminum exterior siding for blowing cellulose insulation from the outside of a house. Melvin Henry Center’s renewable energies laboratory adds value to the learning experiences of all participants

Learning props and individual class projects may include scale models of a building; in this example a scale model of Melvin Henry Center; Inwood. All hands on activities utilize core construction skills as hands on activities for GED Math and Reading Click Here Click Here to learn more about our open access to safety training.

Melvin Henry Center; Inwood Facilities Sponsorships With renovations to the hands on training lab nearly complete Melvin Henry Center is ready to submit its application as a NCCER Accredited Training Facility. As we complete the renovations and seek industry sponsors for accreditation, opportunities for volunteers to accept donated items and sell them during yard sales are expanding. Acquiring one of the following sponsorships will add to the sale of donated items is the primary source of revenue for completing the renovations and the accreditation process.
