Presentation transcript:

Terry L. Rizzo

Physical education is: The development of physical and motor fitness; Fundamental motor skills and patterns; and, skills in aquatics, dance and individual and group games and sports. The term includes intramural and lifetime activities. Special physical education, adapted physical education, movement education, and motor development. What is Physical Education?

Physical activity is muscle movement that substantially increases energy expenditure, including exercise, sport, dance, and other movement forms. Physical education programs, recesses, intramural sports programs, and athletic programs involve physical activity, but each serves a different purpose. Intramural sports and athletic programs provide opportunities for student learning but are not likely to constitute high quality standards-based physical education instruction. Physical Activity

It addresses four Domains of behavior: Social Cognitive Affective Motor Why is PE important?

Students in grades one through six, inclusive, must be provided with physical education instruction with an emphasis upon the physical activities for the pupils that may be conducive to health and vigor of body and mind, for a total of not less than 200 minutes each ten schooldays, exclusive of recesses and the lunch period. Students in grades seven through 12, except pupils excused or exempted, are required to attend upon the courses of physical education for a total period of time of not less than 400 minutes each ten schooldays. The high school graduation requirement is: Two courses in physical education, unless the pupil has been exempted pursuant to the provisions of the education code. How Much PE is Required?

We Need More PE in Schools

PE has content standards for each grade level Look at the California Department of Education website for the content standards Compare the standards to what you’ve seen taught Are team sports the appropriate content for PE instruction in elementary school? Issues: What should be taught?

Active participation (75% on task behavior) Focus on content standards Clear expectations and goals Preparation for student management Assessment of student progress What else? What makes a good PE lesson?

Childhood obesity has quadrupled since 1970, from 4 percent to 17 percent. A healthy skeleton does not depend on calcium, it depends on exercise. Aerobic exercise such as running, swimming, etc. is important but resistance exercise is critical for a strong skeleton. Type 2 diabetes is no longer classified as "adult onset diabetes." It occurs in children as young as 6 years and complications such as blindness, amputations and kidney failure are now occurring before the age of 30. Factors to Consider

More than 90 percent of patients with type 2 diabetes are overweight. Those who appear to be of normal weight have abnormal levels of body fat that has replaced muscle because of lack of physical activity. Children who are physically active during the school day learn better and have fewer behavior problems. Daily vigorous physical activity is associated with increased levels of academic achievement Factors to Consider

The course of study provides for instruction in a developmental sequence in each of the following areas: 1.Effects of physical activity upon dynamic health 2.Mechanics of body movement 3.Aquatics 4.Gymnastics and tumbling 5.Individual and dual sports 6.Rhythms and dance 7.Team sports 8.Combatives What is the Course of Study?

Yes, but... Good teaching takes creativity. Brainstorm with your colleagues how this might be accomplished. Share your ideas! Can PE be integrated with other Curriculum Subjects?

What have you seen? How often is PE taught? What’s the difference between PE and recess? Participation is not the same as education. What does State education code say about how many minutes a week of PE instruction children should receive? Have you seen PE taught?
