What is the Electoral College? The President and Vice President are not elected directly by the voters. The President and Vice President are not elected directly by the voters. Instead, they are elected by "electors" who are chosen by popular vote on a state-by-state basis. [ [

Members of the Electoral College were authorized by the original Constitution to vote for two names for President.

Who won? Democratic Republicans

The result of this election was affected by the three-fifths clause – had slaves not been counted as persons for purposes of Congressional apportionment, Adams would have won Where did Jefferson get a lot of support?

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICANS WIN THE ELECTION… Each elector who voted for Jefferson also voted for Burr, resulting in a tied electoral vote. The election was then put into the hands of the outgoing House of Representatives which, after 35 votes in which neither Jefferson nor Burr obtained a majority, elected Jefferson on the 36th ballot. Who wins now? I’m elected the new President! I become the Vice President Thomas Jefferson Aaron Burr To fix the problem in the original presidential election, the 12 th Amendment (1804) was added to the United States Constitution, stipulating that electors make a discrete choice between their selections for president and vice-president.

LOUISANA PURCHASE French leader Napoleon wanted to establish his empire into North America but eventually needed more money to finance his war in Europe so he approached the U.S. about selling the land to them.

LOUISANA PURCHASE By purchasing the land for $15 million (about 3 cents/acre), the U.S. doubled the size of its country!

Thomas Jefferson asked Congress for money to finance an expedition to the west to explore all the new land they had purchased from the French. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were chosen to lead about 40 men on the expedition
