American Measures This system of feet, yards, etcetera goes by many different names. A few examples: English Household Customary U.S. Measures American This presentation will use American or English.

Length 12 inches (in) = 1 foot (ft) 36 inches = 3 feet =1 yard (yd) 5280 feet =1 mile (mi)

Temperature Fahrenheit F = C + 32, where C is degrees in Celsius Water freezes at 32  F Water boils at 212  F

Mass 2 Tablespoons (Tbs) = 1 ounce (oz) 16 ounces = 1 pound (lb) 2000 pounds = 1 ton (T)

Capacity 3 teaspoons (tsp) = 1 Tablespoon 2 Tablespoons (Tbs) = 1 ounce (oz) 8 ounces = 1 cup (c) 16 ounces = 2 cups = 1 pint (pt) 2 pints = 1 quart (qt) = 32 ounces 4 quarts = 1 gallon (gal) = 128 ounces

Metric Mnemonics Kilothink: Big K, 1000 units Hectothink: 100 m = 1 hm, hundred begins with “h.” Deka is 10 units and Deci is 0.1 unit. Both begin with the letter “d”. In Latin, the word dec means ten. “Decade” is 10 years. Centi is 0.01 unit. The word cent is Latin for one hundred. Think: 100 cents = $1 or “century” is 100 years Milli is unit. The word mil is Latin for one thousand. Think: M is the Roman numeral for 1000 or “millennium” is 1000 years. Micro is unit. The word itself means very small. Note: Most of the small units (deci, centi and milli) end in “i”.

Micrograms Microgram mcg or μg 1 x unit (1 mcg = g) 1 x mg (1 mcg = mg) Commonly used in health care

A few examples… Convert 24 mg to grams: (Move the decimal to the left when converting from a smaller unit to a larger one. One decimal place for every unit you increase.) Convert 15 kilograms to milligrams: (Move the decimal to the right when converting from a larger unit to a smaller one. One decimal place for every unit you decrease.) When you convert between milligram and microgram, move 3 decimal places.
