REPUBLIK INDONESIA 1 STRENGTHENING ACCESS TO JUSTICE (SAJI)

REPUBLIK INDONESIA Facts on Strengthening Access to Justice in Indonesia Project What is it? –Expand and improve access to justice, particularly for the poor and marginalised –It also seeks to improve Customary Justice (Peradilan Adat) system Why it’s important: – Access to justice is one of the keys to combatting poverty -75 % of justice seekers use the informal justice system

REPUBLIK INDONESIA How it works: Strengthening access to justice in Indonesia through supporting the implementation of Indonesia’s National Strategy on Access to Justice (NSA2J) aligned with the Mid Term Development Plan (RPJMN) Developing by-law on legal aid funds transfer mechanisms, eligibility criteria for legal aid providers, and minimum service standards for legal aid providers. Supporting to the Aceh Customary Council in reforming the adat justice system to make it so it is compatible with international human rights standards and national laws. REPUBLIK INDONESIA Key Results: Around thousand poor justice seekers to benefit from the legal aid law Crucial bylaws developed to implement the legal aid law, as well as the design of the accreditation system (41 out of the 310 new legal aid providers approved so far) Leveraged awareness and access for around 800 women customary leaders in Aceh, Central Sulawesi and Central Kalimantan provinces on customary justice mechanism.

REPUBLIK INDONESIA What’s next? Over the next 5-10 years, the focus of UNDP support will be on ensuring government supported NGO’s provide quality legal aid services to those most in need UNDP is replicating lessons learned and best practices from Aceh on customary justice system to Central Sulawesi and Central Kalimantan.
