EIM Definition Enterprise information management (EIM) is an integrative discipline for structuring, describing and governing information assets, regardless of organizational boundaries or technologies. EIM strives to improve operational efficiency, promote transparency and enable business insight. The broad scope of EIM requires a level of organizational commitment to improve the accuracy, integrity, accessibility and security of information assets. EIM is – A discipline for governing the definition and structure of information assets. Provides data consistency across organizations and technologies. Is not a one time project, but rather an ongoing process. Strives to improve operational efficiency (process linkage), promote transparency (data sharing and access), and enables business insight (information value pyramid). Requires a high level of organizational commitment to achieve the goals of improved accuracy, integrity, accessibility, and security. The long term objective of EIM is to resolve data definition, format and content issues across applications and document stores (business processes). EIM Mission Statement To provide integrated enterprise level data and information, managed as a corporate asset, within a standardized and shared infrastructure to facilitate and support integrity of data for daily operations and fact based decision making. The Mission of EIM is: Provide integrated enterprise data and information Manage data and information as a corporate asset Support a standardized and shared data infrastructure Facilitate the integrity of data supporting daily business operations and fact based decision making.

EIM Scope All Consumers Energy data and information assets including structured data and unstructured content. The organization, processes, infrastructure and standards governing management of the enterprise information and content. Cross organizational roles and responsibilities related to management of the information assets. Management of information assets through the entire information life cycle from creation through disposal. Proposed scope of the Consumers Energy EIM program 1) All Consumers Energy data and information assets including structured data (data bases, XML documents, geographic data, spreadsheets, etc) and unstructured content (email, printed documents, Web site content, etc) 2) Establishing the organization, the processes, the necessary infrastructure, and the standards required to manage and direct the effective use of enterprise information and content assets. 3) Coordinate the cross organizational roles and responsibilities related to management of the information assets. 4) Responsibility for management of the corporate information assets through the entire information life cycle from data creation to eventual disposal. Enterprise Information Management is an ongoing process and is not a one time project that comes to completion and gets filed away.

Improves communication and reduces ambiguity within the organization by promoting consistent data definition, format and usage standards. Increases the availability, consistency, and accuracy of information enabling improved business decisions and responsiveness to change. Data Quality Ongoing data quality assessments and exception monitoring over time will improve the quality of the enterprise data resource. Improved data quality provides a solid foundation of consistent information as a basis for actionable and timely business intelligence. EIM serves to instill business ownership and stewardship of the critical business information resources. By promoting consistent data definition, format and usage standards, EIM helps to improve communication and reduce ambiguity within the organization.

EIM Vision (2015) Data and information is recognized and managed as a valuable corporate resource across organizational and technology boundaries. Information assets are managed through the entire information life cycle (creation, maintenance, access, archive and disposal) using well defined processes. Consistent data definition and understanding provides a common vocabulary for the business. Information is managed and utilized to maximize its benefit in support of the goals of the entire organization. A standardized information infrastructure and processes are implemented supporting data sharing and process integration. Information is readily available through common services on a need to know basis and is secured from unauthorized access. Current, complete and consistent information is readily available providing a ‘single version of the truth’ enabling business insight and fact based business decisions. Consumers Energy Executive management recognizes and embraces the role of EIM in achieving the corporate objectives. EIM Vision (2015) What will the Consumers Energy data environment be like in 2015 with the Enterprise Information Management organization, processes, infrastructure and standards in place to manage the data and information resources.
