New Objective: Explain that if more than one variable changes at the same time in an investigation, the outcome of the investigation may not be clearly attributable to any one of the variables.

How well do you know your variables?? You and a partner will be walking around the room and visiting the different “stations”. At each station there will be a scenario to read and variables to identify. Read the scenario carefully and write down the independent and dependent variable on the worksheet. When you are finished move on to another station.

Explain: Scenario 1 Lebron James was testing out his new line of shoes which included three new ultra-performance basketball shoes. Nike told James that using these shoes could increase his vertical jump up to 5 inches. Lebron tested each shoe ten times and his height was recorded. He found the the first shoe averaged only a inch greater leap compared to his current shoe. The second shoe actually caused him to have a lower vertical leap by a.25 inch. Explain: Scenario 2 Mrs. Schulte was baking a cake for Caeden's birthday party. Caeden likes a soft, fluffy cake so she was going to adjust the amount of time that she was going to bake his cake. She normally bakes her cakes for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. She is going to bake four cakes: one for her normal 30 minutes, one for 32 minutes, one for 34 minutes, and one for 40 minutes. Once all cakes were baked and cooled Caeden sat down to try them all. He found the cake that was baked for 30 minutes had the best texture. Explain: Scenario 3 Coach Knisely was working on improving the speed for her softball players. She has read various training programs and has settled on three that she believes could benefit her team. The first is sprinting with a parachute, the second is pulling a sled, and the third is an increase in the number of sprints done at practice. She chose 6 girls from the team who all have the same 40yd dash times, 5.8 seconds. She placed two girls in each testing group and had them train three times a week for a month. When the month was over she tested all six girls again. The girls who increased the number of sprints ran at practice decreased their time by an average of.05 seconds. The girls who pulled the sled decreased their time by.2 of a second. The group who trained with a parachute decreased their time by.3 of a second. Explain: Scenario 4 The other day I went behind my garage and saw that I actually have pumpkins growing! Right now there are three main vines each with 2 pumpkins in it. I know it is too late now to add fertilizer, but I want to be prepared for next year so I purchased three different fertilizers. Luckily for me all of the pumpkins were the same size so all I had to do was add the fertilizer per the manufacturer's specifications. I have not watered them so I am not going to start now. I am going to add the fertilizer for 6 weeks then I will measure all of the pumpkins again to determine which, if any, of the fertilizers worked. So you grab you current phone, and each of the others and head into the house to check download speeds over your wi-fi connection. Using a website, you check each phones download and upload speed over your network. He decides to perform this experiment by placing 10 mice near a radio for 5 hours. He compared these 10 mice to another 10 mice that had not been exposed. His test consisted of a heavy block of wood that blocked the mouse food. he found that 8 out of 10 of the radiowaved mice were able to push the block away. 7 out of 10 of the other mice were able to do the same.
