Presentation transcript:

Our group worked with the Youth Strategies Program to teach a fundamental baking class to the program participants while educating about food costs, coupons, and budgeting.

 We taught one 3-hour class with 12 participants from Youth Strategies. Our primary goal was to teach the participants the basics of baking, a valuable skill for the home and potential employment. At the same time, we expanded the participants’ awareness about cost of goods, sale items, short cuts, couponing, and how to shop within a budget. We also put together a bake sale to raise money for Youth Strategies.

 September 5 th - First met as a group and discussed the project.  September 6 th - First contact with Mike Fohner about the project.  September-November- Met at least once a week to discuss how the project was coming along.  September 26 th - Diana wrote the donation letter and dropped it off at Wal-Mart & Harps.  October 4 th - Emily met with Penguin Ed’s about food donations for cooking class.  October 26 th - Emily started collecting recipes.  October 27 th - Shelby makes recipe cards for baking class.  October 31 st - Diana put together coupon and budgeting information for baking class.  November 1 st - Baking class at Jones Center for Youth Strategies from 12-3  November 2 nd - Shelby begins working on the PowerPoint  November 7 th - Tori contacted Diane Boss about the Bake Sale  November 14 th - Bake Sale In front of library in Burns Hall from 11-5  November 22 nd - Tori & Shelby begin work on website and finalize PowerPoint.

 Our community was served by reaching out and helping twelve teenagers in Youth Strategies, learn basic kitchen procedures that might not have been taught to them in their home. We also worked with the Jones Center and used their Catering Kitchen for the baking class.  Our contact for the project was Mike Fohner from Youth Strategies.

We achieved: Greater awareness of cultural perspective, writing clear, coherent, well-organized documents. Recognizing practical applications of learning theories, philosophical concepts, role and nature of schooling and teaching, and education in general. Understanding of self as a learner and future teacher, integration of our knowledge of self and students to the context of the school. Higher order thinking, effective oral communication skills, and use computer proficiently, and development of soft skills. The students at the baking class needed some level of mathematical literacy in order to measure out the ingredients. The students at the baking class had to have effective oral communication skills to communicate with those in their group and us as the instructors.

 As far as technology was concerned, we used Microsoft Word to make the recipe cards for the baking class, Microsoft Excel to make a spreadsheet that compared different ingredient’s prices between several stores in the area and we used Excel to make our time logs. Also, we used Microsoft Publisher to make signs for the bake sale, and Microsoft PowerPoint to make this presentation.

 The group had to work together and find times throughout each week where we could all meet and discuss the project.  We learned to organize and communicate through , text messaging, and phone calls when preparing for the baking class on November 1 st, as well as preparing for the bake sale on November 14 th.

 To complete the project, we all had responsibilities to fulfill. Group Member Responsibility Emily Suzanne Patten Recipe development Food donation Contact with Youth Strategies Leader of baking class Donated equipment for baking class Diana Kidde Couponing Promotion of bake sale event How to shop during sale promotions Helped with baking class Donated equipment for baking class Contacted Wal-Mart & Harps for donations Make items for bake sale Helped with Bake Sale Made posters to promote Bake Sale Shelby Simon Food costing Promotion of bake sale event PowerPoint Presentation Donated equipment for baking class Making recipe cards Organize individual logs Organize donations Make items for bake sale Organize bake sale Group Log Helped with Bake Sale Tori Mansell Timeline Contact person for bake sale Donated equipment for baking class Helped with baking class Make items for bake sale Organize bake sale Helped with Bake Sale

As a result of the project, we learned about time management and how to work efficiently as a group all semester. We worked together to come up with a creative way to teach the students from Youth Strategies how to bake, basic skills in a kitchen, and couponing and budgeting. As a result of the bake sale along with donations, we raised $208 for Youth Strategies.
