Short Answer What are the Bill of Rights? Explain how they relate to the Constitution. The Constitution forms the basis of the U.S. government. It establishes and organizes the structure of the government, and lists the 3 branches (Legislative, Executive, and Judicial) and the powers each has been given by the people. The Bill of Rights are what we call the first 10 amendments. An amendment is a change or addition made to the Constitution. There have been 27 amendments to the Constitution since it was first ratified in 1789. Each of these amendments are fully part of the Constitution as the document when first created. The Bill of Rights were added to clearly express the rights still retained by the people.

Short Answer Identify the four largest countries (physical size). List in size order (largest first). The four largest countries in the world are: Russia Canada United States People’s Republic of China

Short Answer How did canals and railroads influence the economic development of the United States? Canals and railroads contributed greatly to the economic development of the United States. Both made transport of goods and people quicker and cheaper. Canals and railroads allowed development of the western frontier since people no longer needed to be completely self-sufficient. Goods could be shipped to and from distant places allowing new towns to develop. For example, the Erie Canal connected NYC with upstate New York, and in turn with the mid-western states south of the Great Lakes.

Short Answer How did canals and railroads influence the economic development of the United States? In addition, the building of canals and railroads created new industries that spurred economic development. For example, the building of railroads created a new demand for iron/steel and the coal that powered steam locomotives!

Short Answer 9. How did the United State acquire the Louisiana Territory? Explain briefly giving the background and circumstances of its acquisition. Throughout the late 1700s, control of the Louisiana Territory changed hands several times.   It was originally claimed by Spain, but also claimed by the French. Following French defeat in the Seven Years' War (aka the French & Indian War), Spain gained control of the territory west of the Mississippi River. The city of New Orleans controlled the Mississippi River due to its location at the mouth of the Mississippi. New Orleans was important for shipping agricultural goods to and from the parts of the United States west of the Appalachian Mountains. Americans used the Mississippi to transport products such as flour, tobacco, pork, bacon, lard, feathers, cider, butter, and cheese. Access to this vital transportation link was essential to the growing trade of the western territories.

Americans used the Mississippi to transport products such as flour, tobacco, pork, bacon, lard, feathers, cider, butter, and cheese. Access to this vital transportation link was essential to the growing trade of the western territories. In 1803, Jefferson would send representatives to France (ruled by Napoleon Bonaparte) to discuss the sale of the port of New Orleans.   Because France was deep in war with their arch-enemy the British, Napoleon was willing to cut his losses over Louisiana.   By selling the entire Louisiana Territory to the United States, he both earned some needed gold, and also prevented the British from taking Louisiana itself. The purchase would almost double the size of the young United States and extend its territory to the Rocky Mountains!
