Circle & Line Graphs Statistics

Do Now An article in the Winter 2003 issue of Chance Magazine reported on Houston Independent School Districts magnet school programs. Of the 1755 qualified applicants, 931 were accepted, 298 waitlisted, and 526 turned away. Create a bar graph for this data. Create a relative frequency table Create a relative frequency bar graph

REMINDER QUIZ on Wednesday 9/24

Pie charts show the whole group of a case as a circle. It slices the circle into pieces whose sizes are proportional to the fraction of the whole in each category. Pie Charts are used to display categorical data Pie Charts (Circle Graph)

Circle Graphs A percentage is a part of a whole. A circle graph is an excellent way to show how the relative sizes of the parts compare to each other and to the whole. The sum of percentages in a circle graph must be 100%.

Example If Karie's take-home pay is $3,000 per month, how much money has she budgeted per month for housing and food?

Example: The circle graph above summarizes the ages of students at Davis Middle School. If there are a total of 500 students at Davis Middle School, how many students are at least 13 years old? Example

Line Graphs Line graphs depict changes in quantities over time.

Example Johnson Hospital created the line graph below to show the number of boys and the number of girls who were born at their hospital during each month of last year. Using the graph, predict during which month the hospital can expect to have the most boys born this year.

Example Jason, Steven, and Andrew made a line graph to show the cumulative number of miles they had run for five days. At the end of which day had they run a cumulative total of 32 miles altogether?

Patrick and Malcolm work together but live in different parts of town. Their commute time depends on the time they leave their respective homes. At what time is traffic the worst for Malcolm, making his commute to work the longest? Example

Kaitlyn and Amanda are selling boxes of cookies. They recorded their total sales at the end of each week for 6 weeks. The graph below shows their results. How many boxes of cookies had Kaitlyn and Amanda sold altogether by the end of the fourth week? Example

Look Back Review: Key Aspects of Data Medical researchers at a large hospital investigating the impact of prenatal care on newborn health collected data from 882 births. They kept track of the mothers age, number of weeks of pregnancy, type of birth (natural, induced, c-section), level of prenatal care (none, minimum, adequate), birth weight, sex, and baby health issues (none, minor, major).

Example The three most popular deli meats sold at Delicious Deli are turkey, ham, and roast beef. The bar graph below shows the average number of pounds of turkey, ham, and roast beef sold at the deli over the past five years. Use the graph to predict in which month the deli will sell the most amount of ham this year.
