Christmas is celebrated on December 25, commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ.

Christmas Cards People send them to friends and family. The card usually says “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year“. They started in the middle of 19th century. They show Christmas traditions, e.g. Santa Claus, snowmen, reindeer, holly, Christmas tree, carolling. 1) 2) 3)

Christmas Tree It became popular during the reign of Queen Victoria. Prince Albert brought this tradition from Germany. By 1841 it became widespread throughout Britain. It is decorated with lights and ornaments, e.g. chains, balls, stars, angels, chocolates. 4)

Stockings Children leave a stocking for Santa Claus when they go to bed. 5) They put them by the fire or at the foot of the bed. Santa Claus fills them with small toys, candies, fruit or coins. 6)

A Legend about the Origin of the Christmas Stocking Very long ago, there lived a poor man and his three very beautiful daughters. He had no money to get his daughters married, and he was worried what would happen to them after his death. Saint Nicholas was passing through when he heard the villagers talking about the girls. St. Nicholas wanted to help, but knew that the old man wouldn't accept charity. He decided to help in secret. He waited until it was night and crept through the chimney. He had three bags of gold coins with him, one for each girl. As he was looking for a place to keep those three bags, he noticed stockings of the three girls that were hung over the mantelpiece for drying. He put one bag in each stocking and off he went. When the girls and their father woke up the next morning, they found the bags of gold coins and were, of course, happy. The girls were able to get married and live happily ever after.

Carols They are usually sung at Christmas especially in churches. They date back to the Middle Ages, e.g. Good King Wenceslas, The Holly and the Ivy. Christmas songs popular nowadays are Jingle Bells, Let It Snow, Mistletoe, Silent Night, Happy Xmas, Christmas Time, etc. 7)

Santa Claus or Father Christmas He usually wears a red coat with a white collar, red trousers, a black belt and boots. He lives at the North Pole with elves and nine flying reideer. Children believe that he comes down the chimney when they are sleeping. If they are good, he leaves presents. If they are bad, he leaves a piece of coal. Some families leave him biscuits and milk. 8) 9)

A Christmas Cracker It is also called a bon-bon. It consists of a cardboard tube wrapped in a decorated paper. It is pulled by two people before Christmas dinner. When it splits, it bangs. There is a small toy and a joke inside. The tradition dates back to Roman times. 10)

Christmas Dinner 11) It is eaten on Christmas Day. It consists of roast turkey served with stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, 12) roast potatoes, and steamed vegetables. People finish dinner with Christmas pudding with brandy butter or cream. 13)

Christmas Day Children wake up very early. They open their presents. The biggest meal of the day is Christmas dinner. Before people start to eat, they pull crackers. At 3 o´clock they watch TV because the Queen says “Happy Christmas“ to everyone.

Boxing Day It is a holiday on December 26. In 19th century rich people gave boxes to their workers with Christmas presents. 14) Now people give money to postmen, milkmen, dustmen, etc. People go shopping. Shops have big sales. There are a lot of football and rugby matches. 15) It is a popular day for fox hunting (a drag replaced a fox).
