WORD DESIGN PROJECT

ART TERMS/ CONCEPTS IN PROJECT: Design : A plan, or to plan. The organization or composition of a work; the skilled arrangement of its parts. An effective design is one in which the elements of art and principles of design have been combined to achieve an overall sense of unity.plancompositionarrangementelements of artprinciples of designunity Style/ stylized: To stylize is to alter natural shapes, forms, colors, or textures in order to make a representation in a preset style or manner. An artist's characteristic manner of expression. Also, works of art by different artists may have certain features in common.shapesformscolorstexturesrepresentationstyleartistexpressionart Illustration: To create designs and pictures for books, magazines, or other print or electronic media to make clear or explain the text or show what happens in a story.designspicturesbooksprintmediatext Typography: The design, arrangement, style, and appearance of type matter constitute typography. Among other things, students of typography learn about the uses of various type fonts, including serif and sans serif, capital and lowercase letters, boldface, italic, and condensed type, letter spacing (and kerning), point sizes, and the various factors affecting readability.designarrangementstyleappearancetypefontsserifsans serifcapital lowercaseboldfaceitaliccondensed typeletter spacingkerningpointreadability Value gradation : An element of art that refers to luminance or luminosity — the lightness or darkness of a color. a value scale employing a smoothly nuanced gradation of values. another value scale — or gray scale — in which stepped grades of values are labeled for their percentages of black, element of artluminositylightnessdarknesscolor value scalenuancedgradationgray scale

STEP ONE Design 5 thumbnail sketch ideas of various words using: Various letter styles Various letter formations/ design Various illustrations inside the letter Pick the best word design and draw on a larger scale. Have the word design fill the page (Do not work small). Use a ruler for straight lines ( lines should have smooth curves or straight edges). Draw the word carefully and exactly how you want it to be on the final piece.

DRAW 3-DIMENSIONAL EDGES ON ALL LETTERS Watch 3-Dimensional edge demonstration.

TRANSFER DRAWING TO FINAL ILLUSTRATION BOARD. Shade the back of your drawing with a white colored pencil on the light table. Place sketch on top of your mat board (shaded side down). Tape edges of your paper to mat board to prevent movement. With a sharp pencil or pen trace all of the lines on your drawing (The pressure will transfer your drawing to your final illustration board). Remove tape and rough draft sketch from illustration board. Go over some of your lines if needed.

PRACTICE SHEET/ COLORED PENCIL TECHNIQUES Get a technique practice sheet from teacher. Watch teacher demonstration before you begin. Shade dark to light gradations on all shapes on the page ( Make sure gradations are smooth). Get practice sheet approved by teacher before you begin to work on your final piece. Shade all the edges of your letter with light to dark gradations. Add color to inside details of the letter. Make sure you are adding some variations of value and colors on inside details.

FINISHING TOUCHES Make sure all areas are smoothly blended or filled with a solid color. Make sure all edges are sharp and straight. Add any other finishing details to complete.
