Coe Lake Team Leader Lesson Coe Lake Nature Trail Berea, Ohio Coe Lake Outdoor Science Education

Initial Responsibilities  You must be the first to get to Coe Lake.  Go to the gazebo side and wait at the parking lot until the elementary students arrive.  Stall if necessary so that BHS students can get set up.  Speed things along in case the elementary school bus in late.

Introduction Script  Hello, I am_______and I am a _______ at Berea High School.  Welcome to the Coe Lake Nature Trail.  Today you will have fun in nature as you travel through four outdoor classrooms taught by Berea High School students.

Interesting Facts  Coe Lake is actually an old quarry that was mined for sandstone in the late 1800’s-early 1900’s.  Coe Lake Project was started in 2003  Everything here is sustainable: recycled trail surface, recycled #1 & 2 plastic benches, picnic tables & bridge surface, native vegetation planted, prairie soil recycled foundry sand/ash.  You can improve your own backyard, making it wildlife friendly like Coe Lake has become. Just ask us how!

Lessons  Each science lesson will last about minutes.  You will rotate through the outdoor learning lab traveling from 1 classroom to another every 25 minutes or so.  In the end you will have participated in 4 different lessons at 4 different classrooms.

Safety/Respect for Nature  Stay on trail surface and off of the rocks that line the trail edge.  Stay with your group at all times.  Do not disturb nature – it is a home to many plants & animals (habitat)  If you are caught hugging a tree, you may get a prize!  If you are caught picking up litter, you may get a prize!

 Classroom 4 – Life Science taught by…go ahead & start walking to your classroom.  Classroom 3 – Hydrology will taught by… go ahead & start walking to your classroom.  Classroom 2 – Environmental Science taught by…go ahead & start walking to your classroom.  Classroom 1 – Sandstone Seminar taught by… go ahead & start walking to your classroom. You should be divided into 4 groups already. Let’s get started….

While Lessons are Occurring  Team Leaders will rotate through classrooms ensuring all resources are provided for lessons to run smoothly.  Team Leaders will keep a log/journal during the entire outing. Noting changes in lessons, what we need next time, what works, what doesn’t,…etc. Teachers must communicate possible changes & needs to Team Leaders.  Most important part is “TIMING”.  Without disrupting flow of lesson, hint to teacher 5 minute warning. Then again at 2 minutes until they have to rotate.  Walk Classroom 4 students to Classroom 1. Other classrooms won’t require your assistance during transition times.

At the Conclusion of Lessons  Teachers escort students to the bridge.  Stay in 4 distinct pods around the bridge for proximity control.  Team leaders briefly summarize lessons.  Sing the Coe Lake Song one more time.  Team leaders escort students back to bus on the gazebo side.

After the Visitation  After the visitation, help Mrs. Draves & Ms. Myers in transporting/moving/exchanging bins for the next visitation.  Help to make sure that bins are properly stocked and in good order for the next visitation.
